Southern Rock - Hillbilly's
Reggae - Pot heads/hippies
Indie - Art fags

Oh yeah, the whole Southern/Hardcore/Metal thing has been taking off for a while. Big dudes with beards and cowboy shirts is the new face paint.

I avoid metal heads like the plague. For the most part, the majority of them can't play and most of them can only play metal. The minor part is that I don't like people that identify themselves by the music they play or listen to.

I like metal (is old Iron Maiden, Priest, Sabbath, Dio, Blue Cheer, etc still considered br00tal?) but I'm not a metal head. I listen to jazz, blues, rock, reggae, R&B etc. Within any musical genre you'll have snobs. The only difference is, is that the metal kids were the ones who didn't get laid in highschool and were considered losers. Now they just try to be different... by shopping at Hot Topic...

FIrstly, I will start of by admitting to being quite a metal fan (although such a statement, of course, opens me up to the silly behaviour I am going on to rant about). However, whenever I see a thread online concerning metal, it always seems to me to be the equivalent of a discussion on Star Trek vs Star Wars or who was the better captain of the Enterprise. That's right, I am convinced that metal fans are the true uber-nerds of music. Now, I'm not talking about "geeks" those kinda cool people who are just a little too "in" to a certain topic. I mean "nerds".

You know, "nerds", those socially awkward annoying types who probably deserved all the beatings and harrasment they got in high school because of their snarky "you don't really understand metal" attitude. The same kind of people who will correct you if you make a joke about Klingon's having pointy ears (instead of Vulcans etc).

Some things I have noticed in metal discussions:

1. No one is heavier than the band you like most.

2. It is important to refer to other metal listeners with more casual taste than your own as "kiddies" even if you are only 20.

3. Its not like it was back in the old days (even if you are only 16) and were most defintely not listening to metal in those "old days".

4. No one else is as bigger metal fan as you are.

So what say you? Are metal fans the real nerds or music?



PS. This is in OT because its not a discussion about music, but about music fans, which I think means its not a music related discussion but a person related discussion.

I worked for 5 years in record stores, IME this is all true to some degree.
They are really as snob as jazz heads in my IMO, can't have any discussion about music either with them.
But not all metal fans are like that, some are really cool open minded people.

I myself am a bit of a closeted metalhead, but I'm sure I'm also "gay" in the eyes of most metalheads because I listen to jambands as well,....a most definitely non-brootal group of bands.

That but in a little less closeted as i wear black shirts and drive(well not driving but in the car) many hours to go see the shows i like

Metal is for the nerds that are "too cool" to be considered a nerd.

However, they are not fooling anyone, they think their cool, but really they are nerds. Don't believe me?

But seriously, music is music. Personally I like my music to be aurally oppressive and have INSANE amounts of bass.

Somedays I like it fast, mostdays slow.

Music is music, and for the most part people who [seriously] argue over it are the most ignoreant POS people around IMHO/E

My collection ranges from Bowie to Ice Cube to Suffocation to Electric Wizard and beyond. No country tho, more cus I haven't found any I like (LOL)

I was doing that before it was popular, then it got popular and now I look like I am following a crowd. Oh well, the shirts are comfortable and beards keep me warm.

I wear black shirts myself as well as grey and brown, but I hate band T-shirts. It's gotten to the point that my musical taste are a little to personal to wear on a proverbial sleeve.

I got invited to a metal show a few months ago. We spent a majority of the time in the alley drinking and watching my brother-in-law smoke an entire pack of cigarettes. Being old, I forgot the dresscode and showed up in what was probably cool for about 6 months in 1995. It's how I dress all the time, so no big deal.

After a lot of alcohol, we decided that listening to the concert from outside was more metal than going in and that I was the most metal of us there because metal is about rebellion and I was possibly the only guy there not wearing a t-shirt.

The moral of the story? I'm extremely metal. And I've been drinking.

My cousin is one of the strangest metalheads ever. He is in some kinda screaming, pig squealing band. He provides some pig squealing. A lot of the music he listens to is power-pop and upbeat stuff like that. He wears flip-flops and A.E. stuff. And he wants to become a pastor.
