Threads concerning heavy metal: music's true nerds?

When I was teaching I had a senior in my physics class that was an absolutely devout metalhead. After school one day I let him "educate" me on all the different categories of metal.

1. I can't believe there are actually that many sub genres
2. I can't believe people memorize that many bands and which sub genre they belong in. Of course, the grouping seems to be the biggest source of argument among metalheads.

I found the whole thing interesting, but for the most part metal really isn't my thing so it was interesting just to hear how into this classification people get. But he was a good kid so it was worth me showing some interest in what he was passionate about.

On the other hand, I've also had several conversations with the "dismissive metalhead". The guys who have encyclopedic knowledge of metal but no knowledge of any other genre which doesn't really matter because they look down on every type of music.

My general response is, "which type of metal is best for guys that really hate their dad?"

Remember rule #1 of metal - Never smile. Ever. Smiling is not metal. Neither is fun.

Sounds like marching band but with more "GRRR" and less color :p.

I would liken Jazz heads to be more like snobby wine drinkers that have very specific years that they drink exclusively, while at the same time reminiscing about years past.

That sounds about right, lol.

Well, jazzheads are about the same, if not even worse.

I once talked to a jazzpianist who I occasionally jammed with, and the way he talked about all the jazz subgenres, plus all their places in music history, was very geeky and hautain.
The average metalhead doesn't even hold a candle to that guy.

Just saying.

I also do the same with classical music.
If you say Debussy and Tsjaikovski are both "classical composers".

You'll get a two-hour rant on how Debussy was an innovator with his expressionisme and that he is nothing alike the other and.............

:)

I agree. I also think that the metal crowd shares a specific trait with a ton of non-pop genres: If a band is truly metal, they are not permitted to be successful. They are then sellouts.........

Remember when "Dookie" started selling way too many records? The thousands of Green Day fans turned on them so fast.

Some things I have noticed in metal discussions:

1. No one is heavier than the band you like most.

2. It is important to refer to other metal listeners with more casual taste than your own as "kiddies" even if you are only 20.

3. Its not like it was back in the old days (even if you are only 16) and were most defintely not listening to metal in those "old days".

4. No one else is as bigger metal fan as you are.

2 and 3 are definitely true :)

Actually, you can divide metal fans into two main categories: those who get the joke, and those who don't.

This is also true for metal performers, but a higher percentage of them get the joke. (c.f. Venom and Venom fans as a classic example from "the good old days").

Mine is epic black folk burnt toast BBQ metal.

I am old school. I still spin Sabbath. I smile. I listen to most of the various genre's of metal and those I don't listen to, I still respect. I am a nerd, but my nerdiness is tempered with my being cultured as well. I find it easier to move among most people without awakening suspition. And I will leave with this quote. "The best album is always the bands first album. They have nothing to lose." Ozzy Osbourne.

I'll agree with neediness and disagree with metal 'rules'. If you didn't know me or my friends you would never guess we were metal heads. When I hear something or play something in a metal song particularly awesome, I smile, sometimes I laugh with glee. Let the music speak for itself IMO, I enjoy it, I'm not going to hide it for the sake of being Br00tal. I'm not going to dress in all black to play at a concert, heck I'll wear a polo shirt if I want. We do have some pretty nerdy tenancies however, when to draw the line with odd time signatures, metal covers of old video game music, tech geeks, band geeks. I guess we are nerds all around, but not the snooty type you suggest, only one person has attempted to beat me up in all of my schooling, I'm not an arrogant prick etc. Denotations of a word are weird.
