Three hours to my first ever gig and...

"Make sure you tune your bass now. Don't want to be tuning in stage before we start our set. Bad image"

I don't even know where to begin

Nope not their first gig but it is the first with me as the new bassist of the group as well as being my first time on stage. They've actually done 20 or so gigs in the year that the band has been around

You should take his advice and tune your bass...a half step down.

I told him in a band good sound comes before good image so we'll see.
I WILL be having a quick, SILENT tune before and during our set.

If someone's gonna be out of tune it won't be me. The ball is in his court.

And they never have to tune after leaving the house? Wow, you are in with some incredible musicians with some equally incredible instruments.

I agree with the advice above; tune when you need to, even if it's on stage. If your bass is stable, tuning right before your set should do the trick. I have gotten through many sets without having to tune on stage, but I have had to tune mid-set on occasion. I'd say playing in tune is just as much an image issue as anything else.

They actually are a talented bunch of guys. We're just what I'd call musically immature still. In his defence i think he's just nervous or trying too hard to come across as the consummate professional as we're a young originals band doing quite well locally.

if you string a bass properly and the strings are broken In a little, they shouldn't go out of tune.
I am actually surprised that my basses go out of tune; they generally never need a tweak unless huge temperature change.
