Thunderbird Club

I had some polystyrene plastic I used for fret slot filler on some fretless conversions, and I cut some with a pair a scissors for my jazz bird.. just needs a thunderwoodstock….

I used 3m double sided tape

IIRC when I bought my early model VP (first run of Eppi VPs) they were advertising the fretboard material as “Black tech”, an engineered wood based product, not actual slab cut wood. But that’s just my recollection, I can’t seem to find anything on the web to confirm that.

i remember that, didn’t they go to laurel wood for fingerboards sometime after?

I do believe your memory is correct. My very early run ‘17 VP is pretty dark.

I believe you are correct about the Black Tech or whatever it was called. I have one of the early runs of the VP and pretty sure the discussion back then was about the fretboard being engineered wood.

engineered wood - gotta hand it to the marketing crew...

Wow. You weren’t a teenager until the late eighties? I’m even more impressed by your knowledge of great music.

Well, I think I was the sole loaner of all rock encylopedias in my local library back then. If I just had the same enthusiasm towards the school books...then I got my first bass at 13. You can guess the rest.

me too! :bassist:

Here's a better pic of the light fretboard on the white VP.

I think mine might be the Laurel? Or something that's somewhat similar?

Whatever it is, it's very streaky (and the lightest colored fretboard I have, probably), I quite like it.

That does look nice. The board on my VP is very dark and very uniform and has little to no grain or open pores, I think it’s man made. Yours has much more character.

It might be Indian Laurel fretboard wood, which has a tendency to be a lighter color than rosewood and may even look a bit grey when dry. Pau Ferro is the other possibility, but is usually very smooth with pronounced stripes of dark brown on a slightly reddish brown background when freshly oiled.

some samples (note the Laurel wood looks like it’s been recently oiled so it’s a bit darker than normal)

A Sadowsky bass with a Morado fretboard, which is also called Pau Ferro (this one looks a lot like yours to me)

....probably the Pau based on your description - it's quite smooth. Not nearly so porous-seeming as my rosewood fretboards

T-Birduesday. Briefly tested the Broughton preamp with a real amp and happy to say it sounds good with the L2 too (and I love it's preamp).
A gig today, the continuing saga of those library gigs I did last fall. So people today will see me struggle with the diving neck, muddy sound and a snapping headstock which will probably happen within the first few song.
