Thunderbird Club

@Count Bassie I've reached the point where I'm thinking about finding a guitarist other than my occasional jamming mate to actually start working up ideas (which range from Neil Young inspired loose jamming through blues to krautrock). Then I look at the local musicians exchange website and they're all either 20 somethings wearing empty spectacle frames or if they are more my age they look like serial killers.

There's also my mate in Toronto who wants to do some work, but it's not quite the same thing.

Maybe it's just a matter of putting up an advert: Wanted - middle aged guitarist with small valve combo, looper and ebow to work on original material. Influences include Bowie, Neil Young, Memphis Blues, Krautrock... Serial killers and hipsters need not apply.

That's a pretty good ad. Gotta go drive my youngest somewhere, but when I get back maybe I'll work up an idea for a flyer too, and we can compare notes...

I do like the juxtaposition of hipsters and serial killers.

Ok. Gonna vent because this is the place. I will be mostly ignored, and later I can post something and still have a community that will act like it never happened, and maybe respond with some kind of welcoming enthusiasm. So here goes:

I'm sick to my half-dead head watching bass players from slack to flashy/groovy post their viddies on facebook. "Why, Rog?", you ask?... Well, because I have no time to play, I work almost perpetually, and my non-work time is taken with all manner of issues from peripheral to (mostly) uber-important (i.e., house, family). My reggae band plays once a month now, and we're going to start to suck on a part-time basis because we don't rehearse or play regularly. Might do a rock band, if they can decide to do it, and if they call (I know them, and it teeters on sketchy- great players though, and decent folks).

I can't afford jack-doodie, am selling off instruments (that's ok, not my Bird), and am in a general slump. And I have a toothache- not a tooth but an inflamed nerve from my lower molar, to my same-side ear, to under my left eye. Can't drink cold liquids or chew on my left side. What...

So I'm done now. On the good side I got a raise at work, and the company's coming up with med insurance benny's and some other good stuff. So it's not all bad.

But I can't stand watching all these fancy kids on their beautiful instruments, actually playing them. I'm hating them all...

It sorta sounds like you might just be exhausted. If you work constantly and are busy with your family outside of work, you might just need time away from almost everything. I know how I get when I'm worn out. I don't want to play, I feel like selling all of my gear, and I don't want to be around anyone.

Take a little break and get some rest. I bet you have a better prospective after that.

Count, you're a good man, don't let life get you down.
I can't help much with your financial or gigging situation but a bit of advice I'd give on the tooth front from personal experience is try these...

I always kept a few in my emergency kit when traveling overseas where drinkable water might not be handy. It was a godsend when I was in a remote village in China and broke a tooth. Pop one in your mouth but don't chew it, just let it dissolve next to the injured tooth. Within minutes the pain is gone and stays gone for hours. Works well until you can get to a doctor or dentist.
As for everything else going on, hang tough - it'll get better!

Actually, there are not many animal species I actively dislike apart from cockies and mozzies and various horrible parasites ... but goats I hate. They give me the willies.
I had a pet goat when I was a kid (no pun intended). His name was Peppy and he was as good a pet as any dog or cat I've had. But I understand you're a cat person, loved my Manx and Maine Coon cats too. I wonder if it's the horizontal goat eyes that freaks you out. My daughter is creeped out by goats sideways cat eyes.

Are these the mozzies you hate? If so, I'm right there with you!

Thanks for the good buzz, everybody. I'm fine, yeah just exhausted, in several ways to next Sunday physical and emotional-raising girls is a rugged business in a harsh world. Glad for a weekend... hopefully a little regeneration, though there's still the same level of sundry and frenetic activity! I'ma sleep late tomorrow, fwiw... glad for that raise though!

And Kat, I won't wax sentimental about my daughters' male and female tanks of small Madagascar Hissing cockroach communities (they're cute, don't fly, are non-invasive and don't bite), or the friendly and personable rats she had as pets for a couple years, or the fact that I love goats, and want a pair for pets... Nope. We do have two nice cats though, and one of them is a Turkish Van- she was taken off the streets by friends in Providence as a kitten, and they brought her to us. Sadie's been with us for about 15+ years now. I'll see if I can dig up a picture...

Good man! Lol, that's a big hat for me, I'm afraid! Kind words.
And thanks for the tip, and the encouragement, @GBassNorth! Life is good, man...

Is it confession day?

I hadn't played my 5 string thunderbird for several weeks. I just haven't been happy with the sound I am getting out of it. But, I have been unsatisfied with my Yamaha as well; for different reasons. The Yamaha needs new strings.

With the Thunderbird, I just haven't been satisfied with the sound of the low B string. It just seemed weak and flabby. Separately, I have been looking at amps and cabinets. Looking at the cabinets, there are many that seem to be unable to reproduce a low B. But, in doing my research, I started working through the drop off at the low end and wondering what I can do about it. Well, the light bulb went on, and I got an MXR 10 band graphic EQ [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]. Interesting that the frequencies are all Bs. starting at 31hz. So, I got around to putting it between bass and practice amp, cranked up the low B to +6db. So, now I am back to loving my 5 string T Bird. And just in time - the Yamaha's new strings arrive next week, I have a new Gibson Midtown that is in desperate need of a set up, so it came down to needing to get happy with the T Bird again.

Back to loving my T Bird.
