Mind sharing what EQ you're using? I have an Epi Pro V running through a couple TC Electronic BG250 combos (115 and 210 together), would be interesting to see what diff it might make with my rig.

Way back in post 20462, I described it:

I hadn't played my 5 string thunderbird for several weeks. I just haven't been happy with the sound I am getting out of it. But, I have been unsatisfied with my Yamaha as well; for different reasons. The Yamaha needs new strings.

With the Thunderbird, I just haven't been satisfied with the sound of the low B string. It just seemed weak and flabby. Separately, I have been looking at amps and cabinets. Looking at the cabinets, there are many that seem to be unable to reproduce a low B. But, in doing my research, I started working through the drop off at the low end and wondering what I can do about it. Well, the light bulb went on, and I got an MXR 10 band graphic EQ [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]. Interesting that the frequencies are all Bs. starting at 31hz. So, I got around to putting it between bass and practice amp, cranked up the low B to +6db. So, now I am back to loving my 5 string T Bird. And just in time - the Yamaha's new strings arrive next week, I have a new Gibson Midtown that is in desperate need of a set up, so it came down to needing to get happy with the T Bird again.

Yes, all shielding and grounding has been checked and re-checked.



If I solo one of the three pups (via blend knobs and switches, not via un-wiring, hum is reduced but still present.

How would I test for out of phase?

I wonder if it's worth desoldering the hot contact from each pickup on the volume pots in turn to see what the effect is, i.e. using 2 pickups at a time in turn. If it is an out of phase issue it might highlight it. That is just a guess so read into that what you will

If you don't have individual volume pots, testing for phase will be more complicated. Excuse me if you already know this but you will know 2 pickups are out of phase if the tone gets weedy and loses low end as you turn both volumes up/centre the blend pot.

I had a Pro. Removing the elctronics and installing new pickups transformed it from a Bird-shaped bass into a Bird-sounding bass. It is no longer a Pro.

We've had this conversation before. I happen to like the sounds I get from my active Pro V. Definitely different from my Classic IV passive which is only one of the reasons I like it. If I wanted it to sound like my other T-bird I'd just get another T-Bird, never have understood the reasoning for owning two or more (basically) identical basses anyway. Different strokes.

I generally keep the blend dead center and that's where the bass's tone is the thickest, so unlikely to be an out of phase issue I think.

Lemmy grew up just a couple of miles away from me which is quite close in a sparsely populated island we live on, never knew him though. Not that that has anything to with anything; hardly a classic anecdote really!

Ok, apologies ahead of time for bringing up this much beaten dead horse again, but on a concurrent thread on choosing between a Jaguar and a T-bird, neck-dive keeps coming up. I own a '64 II and a Bumperbird and neck-dive is not or has ever been an issue for me. Yes, my '64 has a hs heavy issue compounded by no upper horn, but early on I discovered a simple effective way to combat it and have never had a nd problem since.

The original '63-'65 birds definitely suffered neck-breakage occurrences - over the years about 8 of 10 I've seen/played have had the repair. (luckily mine has not) I can imagine most if not all of those breaks were the result of turning quickly with a wall/pole/post (or the singer!) in the path of the hs - KAH-BLAM! Here's an example -



But, has anyone ever heard of that break occurring as a result of neck-dive? Anythings possible I guess, but it just doesn't seem likely or at least not common. There are other basses over the years that have far worse neck-dive than any T-bird I've ever played. Any actual stories from actual T-bird players?

I've been toying with getting a SS Jag and put a set of Laces in it... This is tempting though, those look amazing. I love the sound of my Thunderbird and a SS one would be awesome. What pickups are in those? Thunderbird pickups are hard to find.

Ok, apologies ahead of time for bringing up this much beaten dead horse again, but on a concurrent thread on choosing between a Jaguar and a T-bird, neck-dive keeps coming up. I own a '64 II and a Bumperbird and neck-dive is not or has ever been an issue for me. Yes, my '64 has a hs heavy issue compounded by no upper horn, but early on I discovered a simple effective way to combat it and have never had a nd problem since.

The original '63-'65 birds definitely suffered neck-breakage occurrences - over the years about 8 of 10 I've seen/played have had the repair. (luckily mine has not) I can imagine most if not all of those breaks were the result of turning quickly with a wall/pole/post (or the singer!) in the path of the hs - KAH-BLAM! Here's an example -



But, has anyone ever heard of that break occurring as a result of neck-dive? Anythings possible I guess, but it just doesn't seem likely or at least not common. There are other basses over the years that have far worse neck-dive than any T-bird I've ever played. Any actual stories from actual T-bird players?
