Thunderbird Club

I have been on an Old Fashioned kick lately. I enjoy a good whiskey/bourbon/scotch drink.

I wouldn't have touched any of it in my younger years, I suspect it's not meant for a young person's palette. Being well past 50 I appreciate them all now drool

All this Scotch talk reminds me that I bought on good recommendation last year a bottle of supposedly very top notch Scotch. I'm absolutely no scotch connoisseur but I gotta say I wasn't that impressed with the Johnny Walker Platinum that I bought. I assumed at over $100 a bottle it would be noticeably better than Dewars, it really wasn't.

So I'm back in the hunt again, what's a top notch ultra smooth scotch for drinking neat if you like rich flavor but dislike alcohol burn and sharp bite? Anything under $500 a bottle is fair game since a bottle of scotch would easily last me a year.

One of you needs to get that done on a butt cheek - for Christmas.

I'm certain your spouse will approve :roflmao:

My wife laid down the law when we got married, it's a no tat house, end of discussion. If I came home with a TBird butt stamp it would be divorce city. However, if I came home with six Tbirds all I'd get would be a lifted left eyebrow and a snide comment along the lines of, "how can you play that many different basses".
Hmmmm, I think I see a GAS plan developing!

Laphroaig (single malt) is cured in smoked barrels so has a dark woody flavor fully opened up with a bit of water - and very much under $500 ;) However, its distinctive flavor is not everyones choice - one either likes it or not.

Johnny Walker is goatpiss
I've had JW Red and Black in the past, and although it's ok for mixing I didn't like it at all straight. So your comment is about what I told the "expert" that recommended the JW platinum, but he assured me it was completely different than their cheaper stuff. All I can say is it's marginally better than their cheap stuff and fine for mixes but as you noted, goatpiss on the rocks.

It's 5am here in the UK and today is my last day at work before Christmas, the ringing of the division bell has begun

I've never managed to find a Scotch that I could say "that's the one", I suspect it harks back to getting very very drunk on Bells back in my youth. I tend to stick to wine mostly, occasionally a gin and tonic or a Southern Comfort which I have always had a taste for bizarrely
Maybe I'm just not a scotch kinda guy, I'll keep trying until I know for sure. I do love my Gin & tonics though, with Citidel being my Gin of choice. I'm always up for wine and just ran across a few bottles of Sculpterra that were so good I became a member of their small vineyard to get improved access to their new releases. If you can find a bottle of their cab grab it you won't be dissapointed.

Mac Allan 12 year, if I could only drink one brand of Single Malt for the rest of life, that would be it. Try some, it's very good to just sip.
Bowmore 12 is an acquired taste, not for the feint, a bit on the medicine side - Not for everyone!

I love the Balvennie Triple Cask I bought. Smooth and no burn. Only thing is that they told me in Sydney that it was only available in Duty Free stores as an exclusive. I enquired innocently in Auckland and was told the same thing. So prob true. :) not sure of the status in NA.

I got stumbling drunk on Scotch n Coke at the Ashfield Hotel before a school dance. Couldn't even stand the smell for many years after that.
Approaching 50 I decided it was time to grow up and I taught myself to drink Scotch.
