jumping in after reading random stuff here...

Bassomatic - the very first time I saw SNL (in Canada it was initially called Not Ready For Prime Time Players, or something like that), the Bassomatic skit was on. I was hooked on the show for years.
Elton John bass - Dee Murray on Rocket Man... how can you fault that?

Oh yeah, I was terrible in school. My ninth grade algebra teacher had me sit in the front row next to the door so I "didn't have to walk so far to the office" when she threw me out.

I was bored most of the time and day dreamed about being elsewhere. Was an average student because I didn't care and just did what I needed to in classes I didn't find interesting. I was always puzzled after that teacher would explain what we were to do and the smart kids would go up and ask for clarification and other questions. I thought, I get it and you're supposed to be smart. My wife laughs at me and thinks I was saving my brain because my grades through HS were unimpressive to say they least. Went back to college after a few years working and was always in the top of the class and received honors through grad school and was invited into an what was called an "advanced" masters program with limited openings that was structured like a 3 yr PhD program, mostly for those who intended to do that next, which I did not. She says I was two different people. Probably had something wrong with me...and still do.

My daughter's drum teacher Shared his opinion on the Beatles - McCartney overplays on everything; "be better if he just played roots". There was some consideration to changing teachers at that point...

I'm no fan, but know that ain't right.

Not even these guys? They came along after the Beatles, had legions of screaming girls at appearances... Maybe not as big an impact on music...

They're not the same? All those people across the pond sound a like to me.

I can still sing along to every song. And the song order on the US Capitol albums is deeply ingrained in my brain. I'm not exaggerating when I say I've listened to their albums thousands of times.

A good group challenge is to learn a whole album and then play it.

A little '65 Pontiac perfection...........My best buddy Bill (I run model trains with him) and his progress restoring his latest car. I has a ways to go but is drivable - It's quite loud in the most pleasing way.

Interior is getting close too, mostly body work now.

Quincy Jones also made a negative comment about Sir Paul's playing. He later changed his opinion.
A lot of people in the 60s were used to/expected the bass(upright mostly)to play oom-pah.

I'm not a fan of much of the current bass tone trends(distortion, lack of bottom, droning eighth note roots, etc.). Too much-to me-sounds like a guitar an octave(or less)lower. I don't wanna hear the monotonal kick drum as the lowest sound in the music.

As 'someone' here says "Bass--the original Surround Sound."
And I've also heard "The foundation on which everything else is built"-(unknown) IMNSHO. YMMV.

Of course, one also has to remember I'm a Grumpy Olde Phart.

Meat from any of the grazing animals is quite simply a reflection of what they eat. Grazers that dine on scrub brush and tumble weeds (like here in SoCal) taste horrid and gamey. On the other hand, deer and elk in the Midwest that feed in corn fields and wheat fields and on green leafy plants taste quite good.


Can't deny that Elton John was top of the charts in his day. I find his music ok, actually a bit too pop or AM for me but still catchy songs. Odd thing is, for some strange reason I've never liked playing bass with most of his songs. I just never felt a lot of bass love in a lot of his music, it's more vocal, piano and guitar with backup orchestra to my ears.

It's a different style for sure, Dee was a very melodic player like McCartney. I really like playing with piano players, I like their left hands, they do a lot of climbs, 3rds and inversions

There would have been no consideration with me. I'd have a piano teacher teach her, they have more open minds and play nice melodies with their left hand. Maybe he's a country bassist?
