I was bored most of the time and day dreamed about being elsewhere. Was an average student because I didn't care and just did what I needed to in classes I didn't find interesting. I was always puzzled after that teacher would explain what we were to do and the smart kids would go up and ask for clarification and other questions. I thought, I get it and you're supposed to be smart. My wife laughs at me and thinks I was saving my brain because my grades through HS were unimpressive to say they least. Went back to college after a few years working and was always in the top of the class and received honors through grad school and was invited into an what was called an "advanced" masters program with limited openings that was structured like a 3 yr PhD program, mostly for those who intended to do that next, which I did not. She says I was two different people. Probably had something wrong with me...and still do.

Not fitting into the sheep structure of the standard American classroom doesn't suggest anything wrong to me. It tends to destroy the love of learning most of us are born with. Now that's wrong.

OTOH, learning to play a Thunderbird is just right.

A good group challenge is to learn a whole album and then play it.

If you are going to do that, choose something easy like Rush's Hemispheres; it's only 4 songs.

Quincy Jones also made a negative comment about Sir Paul's playing. He later changed his opinion.
A lot of people in the 60s were used to/expected the bass(upright mostly)to play oom-pah.

I'm not a fan of much of the current bass tone trends(distortion, lack of bottom, droning eighth note roots, etc.). Too much-to me-sounds like a guitar an octave(or less)lower. I don't wanna hear the monotonal kick drum as the lowest sound in the music.

As 'someone' here says "Bass--the original Surround Sound."
And I've also heard "The foundation on which everything else is built"-(unknown) IMNSHO. YMMV.

Of course, one also has to remember I'm a Grumpy Olde Phart.

There would have been no consideration with me. I'd have a piano teacher teach her, they have more open minds and play nice melodies with their left hand. Maybe he's a country bassist?

After brief consideration - he's a drummer; his opinion is almost as useful as that of a bingo caller. Having previously learned piano, she is quite aware that he is wrong on most items of music theory. She figured that out when he told her that Dream Theater isn't something to aspire to as they don't play in 4/4 and keep changing time signatures throughout songs.

My sisters were in love with Bobby Sherman. I actually like a lot of the late 60's bubblegum music, 1910 Fruitgum Co were good. This is in retrospect as when this stuff was current I wasn't listening to most of it although I didn't hate it. Sherman's stuff was recorded very good in fact and I can remember actually liking this one.

I was never crazy about the song but yes the bass playing is very good, it's so unlike Dee's usual playing that I thought it was a studio player.

I read one article/interview that said after the original, simpler recordings, he always played the bass line to each song on a guitar on one track, bass on another. True? Dunno. I saw it on the interweb, so...

Very interesting if true. So PM laid down his bass lines in multiple takes with over dubs of guitar and bass. Thats cheating. No wonder I have such a difficult time with his songs…. well that and I suck at playing bass (and even more so on guitar). He's still a great player though.
