Thunderbird Club

I never knew such a thing ever existed, I would have argued all day that the ebay pups was a ringer :)

Our Queens speaks with much authority.
A mate of mine has a lovely Orville by Gibson TBird and it had one of these pickup put into it before he bought the bass, as replacement we guessed.
I have played it and it sounds good.

Maybe I'm being a bit salty, but after the first person to speak up that maybe there's nothing wrong with the SG Bass also pretty directly insulted how I sound by saying that aggressively playing on one of my basses must sound "awful" since I'm not petting it gently like a newborn kitten, and others chiming in, like yourself that any clanky bass sounds like poopiee, I'm a bit peeved. And it hurts when I breathe.

PUT DOWN THE STICK! You have completely the wrong end of it.

As a former Ric player I can tell you that 'the worst in clanky soulless, empty, narcissistic 'lead bass' bollox' wasn't suggesting there's anything wrong with clankiness per se - unless you are also soulless, empty, narcissistic and tasteless. And from what I've heard you are none of those things.

Slotting together vs seamless whole - tomato/tomayto

Cool your jets bonny lad, we're just messin' aboot.

I am a heavy handed player as well, but certainly not a lead bass player type. I think my heavy handedness is why I don't get on with Stingrays or Stainless Steel strings- I can't stand the sound of my playing on a Ray or most SS strings.
Interesting thing is the last time I used a Ray in public, before I sold it, I had a number of people come up and say how great it sounded. I was giving it one last chance- I still thought it sounded like a whole lot of pots being knocked over.

Finally received an update last night (only 9 days after it supposedly departed Dubai) that it had been processed through Sydney airport (not sure if that means it's cleared customs or whatever). Hopefully it will arrive today or tomorrow. No bloody idea where the TC Corona Chorus pedal has escaped to (what was I saying about taste, or the lack thereof?). Maybe they'll arrive together.

I'm hoping it cops a reasonable SVT tone.

Stay tuned.
Re: Tech21 VT and VT-DI pedals- i've had the "original" VT Pedal for about four years now. A couple of years ago i bought the VT-DI. I have since sold off my Ampeg SVP-Pro and SVP-CL Tube Preamps. I'm a believer :)

Yeah I 'm not one to 'just brush the strings' lightly. I started out on one channel of a 75w Bassman clone and when the guitarist in the other channel was doing his feedback pyrotechnics my bass dropped right off, which led to me smashing the strings, which became my style. I remember some 'musos' patronising the 'girlie' because 'you don't have to play it that hard dear'. Well y'know, if you want explosive attack, yes you do, so fvck right off back to your clubhouse and play your MOR schlock some more mate.

It's funny how memories pop up - just remembered a radio program on the local AOR, which the presenter devoted to calumnising all these terrible new young bands writing their own songs, when they should be playing covers.

Ah, the 80s - it was like another world.

I love my Traynor YBA200 but there are times when it may not be convenient to schlepp, or Spaghetti Monster forbid, it breaks, which is where the VT Bass DI comes in.

My apologies, I misinterpreted what you meant. And thanks.

I don't really care for stainless steel strings either. They're one of those "sounds good when other people use them, not so much when I use them" things. When I use them they just sound too 'cold' to my ears, in comparison with the nickels I usually use.

You might have something there actually- I started with a 50 W Bassman and used a 100 W one for years as well, sold that one last year actually- Certainly had to dig in to get heard at all amongst the Plexis, JMPs etc.
Life is much easier now with my GK Hybrid Heads, but I still hit the strings pretty (too?) hard.

Exactly how I feel about them- I hear guys using them and I think - that sounds good.
I so hate the sound of me on SS strings it puts me off my playing.
I use nickel rounds on most things. I have TIs on a few things that I am trying to protect the frets on (not fond of the feel of them though).

Yeah.... turned up and played softly doesn't sound the same as turned down a bit and whacked hard.

What's MOR schlock?

Also, if no new young bands ever wrote their own songs, there'd be nothing for cover bands to cover.

There are a few things like that, for me. P-basses and J-basses, for instance (except that... I think it was the Modern Player Jazz, with the two humbuckers). Stock EHX Big Muff pedals (I have a Dunwich pedal based on a Muff, but there are some big differences). Fuzz pedals on guitar (other people get cool sounds out of them, I just get mush). Active basses besides MusicMan stuff. I could go on.

I'm continuing my tradition of always using RS66 stainless steels.

While the Italia might benefit from warmer/less bright strings, the Roto nickels don't come in the right length (extra long). I had SG bass GAS so bad the other day I nearly put the Italia up for sale, but 1. it probably wouldn't sell, and 2. it's fun to play, so 3. I'd regret it.
I'm trying to not buy anything I'd have to sell something to get, right now. Makes for slower GAS satisfaction, though.

All this string talk reminded me I have a question for you good people. I know there are Roto users here.
A while back I thought I would have a go at a different brand of nickel rounds. I have used Fender 7150 M - pure Nickels for years and years and love them. I won't even use Fender 7250s, which they call Nickel plated- I can tell the difference.
I bought a couple of sets of Roto RS 66LDN at a good price- they are absolutely what I was looking for on my LP Double cut- the ball ends were all brass coloured with pale blue silk wrapped at both ends- they came in a cardboard box.
More recently I bought another two sets from the same supplier and these have the same designation but came in a plastic wrapping. They have coloured ball ends- two are red and one each of blue and white. They have pale blue silk wrapping at the tuner end, but are unwrapped at the ball end. They are a slightly brighter metallic colour than the first set.
I am far less happy with the second ones- they are clankier to my ear and don't feel as nice, to me anyway.
Anyone know what the go is?
