When Yes started to play "South Side Of The Sky" live he played with the Lakland P-bass or the silver (?) colored Mouradian, maybe others too but never seen him playing it with the Ric. The studio version was played on the Telecaster.
They did it live during the early "Fragile" tour but I've never heard a live version from that era.

The Tele was stolen much later and he indeed used it on his solo album sessions in 1975.

On that show "Yours Is No Disgrace" starts with the Jazz but he switches to the Ric halfway thru during Howe's extended break.

Chris talks about the Tele being stolen on the Fish Out of Water DVD but I don't think he gives any clue to a time period.



Anyway, he always sounded like Chris on any bass. New Rotosounds every gig helped with that I'm sure.



EDIT: As usual, on any live YES video, the camera does not give enough Chris time.

True. "Lucky Seven" is probably the last time it was used in the studio. In the early days he used it quite a bit. A great alternative to his Ric sound 'though with both (or any bass as you said) he sounded only like Chris Squire.
A true giant of the bass guitar.

Not a huge influence on how I play now, but certainly the the first guy that made me say "I want to play bass".

I appreciate that this valuation is how you feel, however, the world is made up of many other points of view (including some that inexplicably do not acknowledge the superiority of Thunderbirds). However, the market is made up of many actors with many motivations. To that end, as we say in the financial markets, anything is worth the current bid. You may want more, but the market* will not provide that (and the converse on the selling side). We may look at an asking price and deem it outrageous to ourselves, but we can't say that it is outrageous for all.


* The market is the aggregate of all actors and their motivations. Amoungst all the actors, a market clearing price is found by the aggregate of all transactions. The market clearing price can change any time for any reason, including increases or decreases in buyers and/or sellers, a change in desirability, new uses, etc.

So I appreciate what you think a fair price may be, and many here may agree or disagree. However, if you are not an active buyer or seller, your opinion is worthless in the market. Only the intersection of supply and demand can tell us what an item is worth.

I am not in the market for a new/used Thunderbird right now, so I have no opinion on what a fair price would be to me. Of course, if someone wanted to offer me one for $10, I might have reason to change my mind about my desire for another bass...

I should also note that I view things through the lens of homo economicus and many posit that homo economicus is a fiction that makes economics neat and tidy but does little to explain actual behaviour. The behavioural economists are an interesting bunch and produce some great insights, but classical economics still works marvelously in many situations.

I can measure my CP when I get home, should be the same, except the thickness (Gibson is thinner) - same height/width/string spacing.


You might check with "axemasters" (iirc) on eBay, he used to have a listing for the right size. It's where I got mine, but he had to custom make it because of the increased thickness.

There is no "stock" black pickguard, but you could have one made - several people here have done that. IMHO, if you are going to go to the trouble of having a new PG made, why not go for something more interesting; brass, stainless steel, watermelon...

As for hanging to reach the money frets, unless you are built like a spider monkey, the trick is to use a longer strap and have the bass sitting down on your hip then tilt the neck up. Puts the frets all in easy reach. Take your cues from Pete Way

My solder job putting in Thunderbuckers wasn't so hot and a joint broke a couple nights ago. It is now resoldered. The pickups are also lower. The Flamingo now looks even more like a '64 than it did. I haven't played it through a real amp yet, so i don't know what it did to the sound.

Thinking about it, Veronica's orange Lull might be my holy grail, not a '64. More blasphemy.

So. Tonight's gig was also a trio(wish I'd known b4hand-coulda tooken the TBird-:poop:). One of our guitarists does crisis counseling. He had 2 separate sessions today(Friday). Couldn't make the gig. We had some requests for tunes we'd never done b4 as a group. Did them any way. Crowd loved it/us.

I have done set shows in the past(2 separate shows: day shows and night shows at schools). Sometimes as many as four 30 minute shows/assemblies at one school plus one 90 minute show at another school, up to 50 miles apart, in the same day! And often the first of four was at 7... A.M!* This was 70-72, so I was a whole lot younger. and dumber

*Our opener was "Immigrant Song"-Led Zep. Try that @ 0700. Definitely woke up the little bast...er, students.

We set up early at tonight's(Saturday)gig. 1 1/2 miles from the house. Once I set up my space, I'll know whether I can take the 67. I was not thrilled with the sound of the EB-0 Friday night. Not horrible, but not what I like.:rollno:

EDIT: The Epi EB-0 is an '09. E string output is :meh:. It does not have a true Humbucker. Wish I'd never sold my 66 Gibby EB-3.:banghead:
