Thunderbird Club

Looking at my 2nd Fenderbird project... I might have an opportunity to snag a Goth body with ceramic TB Plus bass pickups.

Not familiar with those, would they have more of a classic TB sound or would they have a more modern flavor a la Classic Pro style ? My current FB has active EMGs, I sorta like them.
Are the TB+ all ceramic or are some AlNiCo? TB+ comes on the CP (modern Gibson) and ProBucker 760 on the VP (60s-ish).

What is BaCH? I'm sure it's obvious

BaCH is a Czech brand, long ago now on a defunct bass forum called "The DudePit" (I know, sounds a bit gay) the guys that were part of the Gibson group discussed and eventually found a way to have a small number of Non Reverse Thunderbirds made by this mfg. The project really came together through the efforts of Rob van den Broek here on Talkbass @Basvarken as he did the field work and dealt with BaCH directly. Rob is a very talented bassist, graphic designer and is the author of https://www.thegibsonbassbook.com/ Highly recommended reading!

No original truss Rod covers were damaged during this experiment..I cut out duplicate covers from an old WBW pick guard
The originals are in the case.
For me it’s just something different.

Amazing! Is it set neck as well?

I remember the Dude Pit very well.

I was also involved in one of those "bring it back" projects from a dudepit member when some Canadian fella (I believe) produced a batch of kahler bass whammy bridges and I bought one.

I want to say they were called like pig face or pig knuckle

I routed out an Ibanez SDGR1500 and put it on it. It was awesome!

Isn't the goth series the no frills all black series that Gibson out out a few years back for very reasonable prices. I thunk epiphone did a lower end line where the body is from.

They were all like flat black finish with red crescent moon inlays I think?

The Gibson Goth was a very low number run, maybe 400 units. You hardly ever see them come up for sale. If you find one, keep it stock, it should appreciate nicely. The Epiphone Goth grows on trees and can be found in prices that range from $300 to $600 on Reverb.

If I remember correctly the entire gothuc series, guitars and basses, were well under a grand for US instruments

The Dude Pit was hilarious! At least the Gibson part of it was.
BaCH is a set neck bass, there were 3 small groups of them made all similar but with some variations in them. At onne point I had two........( I'll kick myself in the ass later for selling them)

Where to buy the book? Do you think that there might be copies in ebay?

Absolutely astonishing and amazing. If I had a neighbour pull out that collection, I'd have a friend for life.

Love the Reverse thunderbird with the reverse headstock.

Am I seeing an 8 string non reverse in There?

Sounds about right, I’m thinking around $700 at the time.

There’s one for sale in Japan right now that will run about $1400 shipped…
2006 Gibson Thunderbird Gothic [4.20kg] | Reverb
Or one that will be closer to $1700…
Gibson THUNDERBIRD IV GOTH Electric Bass Guiter w/Hard case F/S | eBay

If you’re not locked into the Gibson Goth you can find Korean build Epiphone Goth Tbirds that look fairly close (different logo on the pickguard, different pickups, unique Roman numeral at the 12th fret). It won’t sound exactly the same, because of the pickup difference, but it will still sound great and with a few cheap mods is a killer bass. My modded Eppi Korean Goth is one of my best sounding Tbirds, it’s the one on the far left…

I'm going through trying to decide which one I'd take, but I can't decide!

When epiphone came out with that neck thru thunderbird about 20 years ago, i couldn't believe they were producing that quality and the current neck thru ones I've seen from them seem just as nice.

That beige one right in the middle. I feel like that's a special one I've seen before.

Is that someone's signature model?

Some have gone since this picture was taken - replaced by a few more, A new group shot is a goal for next Spring I guess. I don't have the 8 string anymore but know where it is and have a long game to get it back. The biggest change was getting a '64 II.........

I was on the DudePit, never knew that about BaCH. I ordered that book a few years ago during the Pandemic while I was out here, long story short, all my mail including that book, CD's Ric-O-Sound box etc got lost. My brother was supposed to be watching the mail. :sour:
