Thunderbird Club

I meant these two types, the pedal ones are waaaaayyyy too much expensive for me:

I have a snark, which works mostly okay, but as mentioned earlier, can be challenging to get the E/B dialed in.

I also use a phone app, usually smartchord, I like it best of the ones I've used. But, for phone apps, you have to have a relatively quiet space.

The two above, I just use for a quick tune, mostly to tweak one that's close, or to get one close when I've had the strings off/loose.

For accuracy, for example when doing a setup or setting intonation, I'll use this:

I need to buy a tuning device, what would you guys recommend it's best: the ones that clip on the headstock or the ones that you insert the cable into the device to tune? Which is best or more precise?

I use the BOSS TU-2's which are commonly seen on stages and can be bought used for less. But there are many brand tuners in many different price-ranges.

I personally prefer not to have a clip-on hanging on my bass.

Hi to everyone

Became the owner of Gibson Thunderbird USA 2001.

There is a high action with the original bridge

Replacing the bridge with Hipshot or Babicz

Any recommendations?

Thanks

Assuming there’s nothing wrong with the neck and the bridge saddles are in their correct positions, a proper set up should cure the high action.

I have a lot of basses with three point bridges and I love a nice low action with zero fret noise, none of the bridges are maxed out as low as they could go.

Unfortunately the set up instructions many of us use in this club would be a bit problematic to translate to the OPs language. In which case, just get the Hipshot, it’s cheaper. Probably won’t make any significant difference in action though.

I’ve find that as much as I love the clip on ones with the Korg or Peterson being the most precise, they don’t handle the low E and B strings on a bass as well as a standard pedal format tuner, those are 10x quicker to tune those bass strings acurately.
The receiver for my wireless is also a tuner. It works very well for both the Thunderbirds and the doghouse. On a noisy stage, it's hard to tune by ear quickly and unobtrusively and accurately.

I was just thinking that!
The other option is an app for a phone or tablet. Why buy more hardware?
I find the snark clip on tuner goes through batteries, so for rehearsals (if I don’t have my pedalboard) I just put my phone in front of the cab and use an app called Cleartune.
Good point, Irv. I have one on my phone as well as a backup. Works fine and was free. Mine is called Perfect Tuner (Android). Not as sensitive as other tuners, but gets you in tune.

I prefer pedal tuners over clip-ons, I find those annoying 'cause they look back at me :eyebrow:.
Haven't tried a whole lot of tuners honestly, but out of the various Boss, Line6, Zoom and Snarks I've tampered with, I'll go with a Boss TU-2 anyday. Mine's been on every bass pedalboard since I started playing bass in 2008 (the only pedal that survived whatever moods or desires over the years) and I find it much easier to dial in than the TU-3 I use for acoustic guitars.

I disagree.

you pay for accuracy…..those last couple of cents don’t come cheap…
I can tell when something is out of tune, but doubt I can start from scratch. I'm sure it would be more along the lines of "Jazz" tuning! When skinny, I used to be able to hold the bass against my pelvis bone and feel the vibrations when playing a note and it's open string. Handy during a noisy gig and before cheap tuners.

I have to admit, I've run into young guitar players in recent years who don't notice they are not in tune. I feel bad, but often have had to suggest they check their tuning. How can you play guitar and not notice normal chords don't sound right is beyond me.

I'd go with Hipshot.
I have a Babicz on my silver FenderBird and I'm honestly not crazy about it, but in all honesty it might not be installed in the best of manner. I installed Hipshots on pretty much all the Jazz basses I've had and recently installed my 1st Supertone one the FenderBird I'm having assembled/refinned. Direct fit, no hassle, easy intonation.

Personal preference I know, but I'm with you. While playing at home I don't mind, but even then take it off when tuned. Weird I know, but I don't even like seeing them when other's play. One of my many "issues."

..really?….Wood and Richards have been outta tune for years…
I remember keys of songs and will play one on the phone for the fundamental….then tune from there….sometimes an A or E from the guitarist, the rest by ear (using harmonics)…..faster for me that way…

Like the old days of tuning buy the record or tape if no keyboard was around!

I have. Oth styles. They both work fine as well as I can tell.
However, I virtually only use the Snark clip on these days. I only use the other if I think “hey I haven’t used this thing for a while, I’ll give it a go again.”
