Thunderbird Club

Personal preference I know, but I'm with you. While playing at home I don't mind, but even then take it off when tuned. Weird I know, but I don't even like seeing them when other's play. One of my many "issues."

When I got my 1st bass in '66 as a young teen I used a tuning fork to tune. I bought a clunky plastic Korg tuner when I played in the Eddie Taylor Blues Band in Chicago in the '80s. Steve & Eddie also used it to stay in tune. (band tuner) I still have it!

When seeing live music, I'd often see players using the the BOSS TU-2, so I bought one - have had it for years and still see players using it. Bought another for home use and the original one is part of my pedal train. Whatever works for each individual. :bassist:

I personally always use a clip on tuner on all my Tbirds, it’s the only thing holding the headstock in place! :roflmao:;)

I own two - didn't buy either. Won one in a raffle and the other came with a (used) bass I bought. I use one when working on a bass build before the electronics are installed.

To satisfy the curiosity of @BklynKen, I bought, received and installed a set of SIT Power Wounds. :smug:
I wanted to try them on the NR so that's where they landed first. I'll take that bass to practice Wed and see how they preform. At home, they sound pretty good. I'm not sure they are the same as David Ellefson's. They don't seem as bright and might have more mids. The true test will be to try them on the Jazz. They seem slightly more smooth than the DEs, which have a slight bit of the SS grippy feel, while being NPS. The Power Wounds are really nice feeling strings.

If I were a gigging bassist I’d certainly rely on my in rack tuner or pedal tuner, but I’d still have a clip on Snark in the gig bag as a backup. If nothing else, in a pinch you could loan it to others in the band if needed, hard to do that with a pedal or rack mount unit. For home use, the clip on gives me everything I’ll ever need.

One thing I do with my clip on that would be a bit more problematic with a plug in tuner is maintenance tuning. I have about 50 basses/guitars hanging in my home practice room. About once a week I go through every one of them and tune them up to pitch, check the action and check fretboard condition. That’s a lot quicker and easier with the clip on.

I’d be interested to hear what other 2022 Gibby NR owners are stringing their basses with. I liked the stock rounds that came on it. Hated the GHS Precision flats I put on it. Replaced those with EBCFs and like those but still thinking the stock strings sounded better. At this point I’m thinking the new NR really wants bright strings to open up the pickups, which seem to be voiced a bit darker than my VP pickups. Maybe some David Ellefsons?

Solid point. Guitarists never have a tuner (or a cable). Maybe I should get a cheap clip-on.

SIT Power Steel. Disclaimer: I don't own a 2022 NR.
