Thunderbird Club

If I were a gigging bassist I’d certainly rely on my in rack tuner or pedal tuner, but I’d still have a clip on Snark in the gig bag as a backup. If nothing else, in a pinch you could loan it to others in the band if needed, hard to do that with a pedal or rack mount unit. For home use, the clip on gives me everything I’ll ever need.

One thing I do with my clip on that would be a bit more problematic with a plug in tuner is maintenance tuning. I have about 50 basses/guitars hanging in my home practice room. About once a week I go through every one of them and tune them up to pitch, check the action and check fretboard condition. That’s a lot quicker and easier with the clip on.

As I said, everyone chooses their individual means to an end. (aka, preference) A tuner (which in my case happens to be a pedal) is something I take for granted.

Also use Boss TU3; I bought it pretty inexpensive at a local store.

It spent a year or more, on display in her window, I made a discounted offer and voilá, gotcha!
Perhaps in my city, tuner pedals are not so popular.

Remind me.., how is the TU-3 different than the TU-2?

Saturday night gig, ‘76 Bicentennial. Ignore the weird purple light on my face. :)

I need to buy a tuning device, what would you guys recommend it's best: the ones that clip on the headstock or the ones that you insert the cable into the device to tune? Which is best or more precise?
My favorite by far is the Korg Pitch Black pedal. I used to have a Korg rack mount tuner but it really didn't fit with my vintage style rigs. The Pitch Black is fast, accurate, versatile and has a super readable display.

So 2022 was a bust for me gig wise, one Who's That show in early summer. Then our drummer left so I just put WT on the back burner and looked for other gigs, the landscape was pretty barren and any offerings sub par. A few weeks ago Who's That decided to move forward and search for a new drummer. We got very lucky and found a great match right away, I swear he sounds just like Moonie and even better yet first rehearsal he played through the entire set list with barley a glitch. Hopefully we will be ready in January.
It also looks like I will be playing in a Sabbath/Ozzy tribute, I just landed the gig. Everyone has done this type of gig before so ramp up time should be minimal. I'm excited about this gig mainly because I get to cop Bob Daisley riffs and sing his praises. He's one of my favorite bassists and doesn't get the recognition that he deserves. Unfortunately I can't find any evidence of Geezer or Bob using a Thunderbird. Both Geezer and Bob used stripped natural 60s Fender Precisions so I'll probably go with that and various EB3 type basses. I built this stripped 60s style P with a mudbucker, it really sounds great in the band mix. I'll probably use my two Marshall stacks for the gig. Here's to 2023!
