Been doing some numbers and studying the situation and have figured out that if I want a Rickenbacker like bass I'm going to have to get either an used Rick or a new one since for what I've seen Greco's Rick's have gotten close to Rickenbackers in price, so maybe I'd better save some more wait longer and get a Rick...

I agree - I had a very nice one but it didn't become one I reached for. It was also profitable to sell at a time when I needed money. I let a few very nice basses go for similar reasons. No regrets - life's needs come first.

I can see the Pbass has an extra control for the mudbucker, but the J doesn’t seem to have one. I wonder how they wired it?

The original J control panel has 4 knobs, the output jack has been moved to the side. There's also two rocker switches near the mudbucker, the other could be for the in-built phaser:

Here's a track of Doug Rauch playing with David Bowie in 1974. At one point he switches the phaser on for a moment by accident I think. He played those funk riffs by his thumb using an up-down technique nowadays known as double thumbing.
I'm glad Tony Visconti mixed the bass high on that album. Doug played through an Acoustic 360/361 stack on it.

good one "goosing" something is like raising/increasing whatever "it" is. So goosing the bass would be increasing bass output. Maybe that's not a common slang-term there. There's also "goosing the pedal" (increasing downward pressure on a car accelerator) and of course the juvenile "goose"... which you'll need to look up.

Then there is "goosing" someone.... But that's a little different.

I got my first in 1970 . I bought it because of this cover, except of course it was a Jazz, I didn't know the difference, he had an EB-0 pickup in it which is where he got that big sound.

I liked the Pbass Mel had that had the mirror pickguard on it.

We have established that @MCF was on the lamb, spent time in the pen, broke out and now does beer commercials for a living.

I used a RI Fender Tele-bass mud-bucker on this parts-bass J. Sold it years ago. (made to sell) Colour matched knobs-to-pu and a 3-way pu switch. (I can't recall how I wired the switch)
