Thunderbird Club

Yikes that looks like a few shorts waiting to happen. At the very least, I’d get some tape in there!

I agree - it's pretty bad. And it doesn't even have the battery & battery plug! Not 100% sure how those would fit in the current state.......:rollno:

Strongly leaning towards ripping out all that 35 year old wiring wreck & putting in some neat & orderly EMG stuff

A session from 2016. Me on 8-string (the frankenstein Hamer 12 with 4 octave strings "on holiday"), Yamaha synth and a bass solo done on the left one:

What's the Bach nut width?
It was a bit of a nutty day yesterday.

I emailed BaCH to ask if the bronze nut shown on the website will work on their Thunderbird. We’ll see if they respond. They don’t list the measurements on the website.

I measured the nut on mine. It is essentially 38 mm long, 5 mm wide and 8 mm high. Tusq has a black precut nut that is very close: Black TUSQ XL Bass 4 String Nut L37.94mm (PT-1238-00). It should work with at most some minor sanding. So I ordered one.

This is what I’m replacing:

Why would you wanna replace such a beautiful piece of craftsmanship?

With a splash of E.L.P.

The jarring riff behind the guitar melody always reminded me of UK ("In The Dead Of Night"). The bass solo is a straight lift from Chris Squire or at least I tried. Quite a bright sound from a Thunderbird so there goes the "muddy" reputation again. Yes, I know, let's not tell anyone about it...

Right?

Seriously. It is a very nice, well made Thunderbird. Why they used a piece of plastic for the nut is yet another of life’s mysteries. They could have used a Tusq for a few dollars more. Or their own bronze nut if it fits.

Had a nut like that on an el cheapo Glarry that shattered on the G string. The TUSQ replacement was very solid.

Or even Todd’s Utopia. Very well done.

Todd's Utopia is one of my fav prog bands ever and I also liked their later poppy stuff. "Oblivion" is especially great.
The very first album "Todd Rundgren's Utopia" is my choice of the best American prog album of the seventies. They had their influences (Yes especially) but had their own twist and some humour too.
