Yes, those are different animals altogether. Don't let the VP fool you. It can definitely be bright and aggressive, but can also do big and smooth as well.
A couple of years ago I stumbled on to the BaCH website and IIRC they had bronze replacement nuts in stock then.

I’ve heard good reviews on that preamp, haven’t tried one. Be sure to keep us posted on how it sounds when done.

Yeah..... I'm not really a p-bass, of either variety, sort of person. Not really a huge fan of P/J either, honestly.
But, if we only were playing what we needed....... nobody would have designed & built anything past Leo's first.

Nope. I needed a Thunderbird. Or at the very least, Thunderbird pickups. Otherwise, we'd all be back at second ... I mean double bass.
Ernie Ball Cobalt Flats[1] tame the top end without losing it completely.

If you want to see a real mess, when I get a chance I’ll have to pull out one of my prototype mule basses and post a pic of the control cavity. It was a custom active design that I worked with both Audere and John East on to see who could come up with the best solution. It was a two pickup three knob bass and a pickup selector with each pickup having its own discrete two band preamp feeding into a single stereo output jack. Using a stereo instrument cable into a dual mono splitter allowed me to run one pickup through one bass rig and the other pickup through a different bass rig, each having whatever sound shaping pedals I might want.
The East solution was a work of art in miniature components and ribbon wire. The Audere solution wasn’t nearly as eloquent and involved a rats nest of wires so massive I could hardly get the control cavity plate back on. Both worked as desired but I locked in on the East preamp as the better designed solution.

Recall that I was planning on involving my wife in my current Work in Progress (WiP) to help take her mind off other things. Well, she had plenty of down time in the hospital so she researched different finishes for the Wenge necked Mahogany body NR build. She settled on a fantastic Gibson (and Oldsmobile) color you don’t see often - Gold Mist Poly.
Should look fantastic with the oiled Wenge/Wenge neck, chrome hardware and a parchment (not white like the photo) pickguard…
