Thunderbird Club

How are things going with the weather over there? I've heard that there was a bad storm either on its way or already there. Is everyone okay? Sorry if I've been absent, but classes have been insanely hectic...

Here on the west coast - we're having a real winter for a change. Lot's of snow up north, major flooding down south.., CA does everything big.

Went into the studio Monday, got four more songs done. All in one day. Great working with players that have their parts down and can work efficiently. And high praise for the Engineer, partial producer and owner, Bart Thurber, House of Faith, in Oakland. Excellent guy to work with, and always has great suggestions to add bits here and there on vocal parts, and other little extra guitar parts, and so on. I worked with him 30 (!) years ago when he was in Palo Alto and he just knows how to make you sound exactly the way your music should. These are the second group of four we did with him and I’m really looking forward to hearing these new ones. The first four we did back in October, are all up on Spotify, Pandora, Apple Music and Amazon. Just search “Red Sun Ruins”
It’s also an interesting space with some real vintage stuff all around, such as the vintage Leslie Cab. Maybe next time we will have a song that can utilize it!

I love the sound of a real B3. I'm nutty enough that I'd still be willing to be one fourth of a B3 crew.

"Mr Bass player... could you please just stand alittle further back.....alittle further please.... alittle further please.. keep going...your almost there....ok perfect...alright everyone, say cheese."

At least you're the 'center' of attention! :)

A day in the life of a bass player. Sound guys often do the same thing mix-wise.

And recording.., except when I'm paying the bill. :) As Jerry Wexler said: "more bass"

We've been having hot and muggy weather here on the Pacific coast........of S America. The heat is very unusual and I'm already sick of it, there was a cyclone a little north of us a few days ago and we actually got some real rain which is also very rare.

True enough. After hearing some recordings, I always wondered if the bass player ever sat back and said, "I did play bass on this didn't I? Why am I not heard?" Good sound people and engineers know how to mix so that every instrument and individual is heard at the appropriate time and level. The rest don't and need to learn before pretending.

Doing the pickup opening with a coping saw and sandpaper is not easy!
Tell me about it! Royal PITA.

I used to have a relatively fully equipped wood shop in my last house. My old Delta Scroll Saw would have been a handy thing to have for this job. I could have knocked it out in an hour or less vs taking the entire day doing it by hand.

But now that I have your attention - let me know if you’re interested in making a custom 3 ply NR pickguard from my plexiglass template.

Just listened while working. Nicely done! Thanks for the heads up.

Thanks! Those were done late last year. The next stuff that we just recorded Monday will hopefully be up in about a month. The new recordings have a couple of songs where I do a bit more interesting stuff during a couple of parts, but mostly the bass stuff is just fun heavy rock, really fun stuff to play, and I like doing it. Not necessarily on par with stuff I’ve heard from many of you, but the stuff this band does is right where I’m at and some of our new stuff we’re working on has room for me to get creative. My other band, Bad Lemon, is more straight ahead rock, with really standard, what you would expect, basslines, but a few gems that have some creative stuff too, and more coming from there too.

With the advent of sub-woofers, bass was pushed to extremes possibly as a reaction to it usually being buried in the mix. It also moves air, which is a physical connection for an audience and I get that. Big live show these days tend to goose the kick-drum in a similar extreme way. (too much) As a bass player - I've never liked 'too much bass', just as I don't like too much of any of the mix. Definitely want to hear the singer(s) voice/lyrics clearly and everything else with equal dynamics. Everyone in the band/ensemble needs to be on the same page to make it happen. It's pretty clear when the mix is right - everyone can hear each other and the result is a good presentation of all your hard work. Should be 'needless to say' but I speak from experience...

More cool Tom Petersson, with his daughter Lilah.

I bought a '62 EB-0 on Reverb that had been pleked and had had a middle pickup put on it by Mike Lull. I told the guy it would be a few months until I got back to the States and to please hold it for me which he agreed to. He got sick of waiting or more likely saw that bass prices were going up astronomically so he refunded my money and sold it for about 500 more bucks than I had paid him for it. Oh, he charged me a 10% stocking fee. I complained and got the money back but I really wanted that bass.
