There's a a fair amount of meter gauge in South America a lot of it uses some rather bizarre rebuilt US locomotives ( and some purpose built ones as well. As an aside factoid almost all US and a good deal of Europe's gauge is 4' 8 1/2", the same as a Roman chariot.

In some Southern states it's 4' 9". Just so it's not the same as "them damn Yankees". I doubt that 1/4" on each rail is gonna matter.

Then it's possible it's just tradition began with horses for whatever reason. Are dog races also counter-clockwise?

And here's an exception. Do they ever rationalize why they do both? Is it to spread-out disciplines for horses/riders? I wonder if animals can be ambidextrous. My little Mona is left-pawed. She lifts her left leg to pee and if she offers a front paw, it's always her left paw. She moves pretty quick when she wants to, but she doesn't race. :)

Not that I know about. I not really into horse racing but have seen a few.
I suspect that when they started the colony of Melbourne it could have been just as simple as “don’t do what Sydney does”
The greyhounds in Sydney race anti clockwise though. Just to make things less clear, I’m not sure about the trots and pacers though. My dim memory seems to suggest anticlockwise but maybe they switch around track to track. I’m not much into losing money so I really have nothing more that a social interest. Barely that.

:D So true.

Person A: "There was Paul McCartney."
Person B: "What?"
Person A: "Paul McCartney. He was right here. You didn't see him?"
Person B: "No, I had to take a selfie of my unique experience of me eating McDonald's fries."
Never liked McDonald's I was always hungry half an hour after eating there. And selfie-obsessed people are SO annoying...

That would explain Norfolk Southern's issues of late.

Actually it would make a big difference because of how the rail is crowned, the shape of the wheel tread and the fact that its's point of contact is about the size of a dime. 100 tons resting on 8 dimes = low friction.

I attended a lecture by a famous cycling coach in the '90s who when asked why velodromes always were ridden/raced counter-clockwise said that it was easier for humans to turn left because our heart was on our left side. Always wondered if that was based in fact...

When I try to write left handed - it's not 'neat' but it's backwards. :wacky:
When I try to write with my left it looks like I'm writing a demonic spell, lol.

The rails are 4', 8 1/2" apart. Most railcars are over 10' wide. Thus not a good idea to drive up close to the tracks.:rollno:
The colonies here had different rail gauges and you used to have to change trains at the border to get on a local sized train. Since Federation (1/1/1901) they found that wasn’t a great idea for fostering trade among the States (which is what the Colonies became). Took years and years but now the Interstate tracks are all the same guage. i think the local cities have kept their odd sizes. NSW I think is standard 4'8.5". But the Govt is rushing a "Metro" into Sydney which I think is standard gauge but driverless and promising service every 4 or so minutes. Started with serving areas that never had ‘heavy rail’ but now about to replace a (relatively short for Sydney) route.

From wiki.
In the 19th century, each of the colonies of Australia adopted their own gauges. However, with Federation in 1901 and the removal of trade barriers, the short sightedness of three gauges became apparent. It would be 94 years before all mainland state capitals were joined by one standard gauge.

The three main railway gauges in Australia are narrow: 1,067 mm (3 ft 6 in), standard: 1,435 mm (4 ft 8+1⁄2 in), and broad: 1,600 mm(5 ft 3 in); a slow progression towards unification to standard gauge has taken place since the 1930s.

Thanks. We try to do our best for him. Even to the point of getting him some pulled pork and chicken to add something to his dog food that will make him want to eat. Both Labs we've har were very picky eaters. When young it wasn't much of a problem, but now he has to eat to get his meds.

No he's not. Nothing for pain or inflammation. He doesn't seem to hurt as far as we or the vet can tell. But Labs tend to lose muscle in the hind legs as they age (as well as a few other things). In some causes they rear end just can't go any more and the rest of the dog is working fine. That's a tough one when that happens. He's just on heart med, a diuretic, spironolactone (also helps with fluid), and something to help with kidneys. We tried a med (an SSRI), that might help with cognitive decline but it didn't seem to do anything.
My vet told us that we shouldn't feed pork to our dog, that it's bad for dogs. That we can use salmon, beef, fish, chicken or turkey. Maybe check-in with your vet about that? Also, bread makes dog lose fur, not shedding, actually balding. We've seen that happen with our dog.

I'm pretty sure they really are 4' 8 1/2", but say 4' 9" to be a PITA.

I worked at horse-race track in Omaha, Nebraska during the summers in the '70s. One of our jobs was sweeping the grandstands littered with cups, paper-trays, race forms and ticket-stubs after the days races. We saw regular down-&-outs lose big-time every day. Betting's never been in my blood and seeing all that money squandered reinforced my lack of interest.

He is, indeed. I can't believe he's still alive. He's 15 and that is well past the expiration date for a big dog. We are not keeping him going for our own wants, which some do. He still likes going out and doing dog stuff like sniffing to see what animals have been in the yard and looking at the deer. But he has a hard time with steps (cognitively as much as physically), and thinks he can't jump on the couch or chair anymore. He has congestive heart issues, among other things, and I'm always balancing his meds to keep his breathing as easy as possible, but not strain the kidneys too much or dry him out. He's a lot of work and we haven't had a full nights sleep in months, but he's worth it. When we wake up, we're just glad he's still alive and are thankful for each day.
Tell him that I said that he is a good dog.
