Thunderbird Club

I used to do a lot of handicapping for horse races. It’s mostly about probabilities and statistics plus a pinch of intuition. Never had a loosing day at the tracks, I always walked out with more than I came in with. Yes, I lost money on individual races but that was always more than offset by the winnings on the other races that day.
The two things to remember are - there’s no such thing as a sure bet, and never take more money to the track than you can afford to lose.

Good points on all.

I allotted my self about 50 bucks that day.
The one thing i did have up my sleeve was learning the stats on how the horses raced under certain conditions, and how often.
(Don't even remember why i was interested in that)
And that was well before they invited me a to an evening of debauchery.

Was one of those good chance days i guess.

I've only ever been to a horse race track once.
In my United Airlines days.
Most of the people i worked with were regulars to that sort of thing.

Long story short.
They asked me to go with them one time.
We made the last 3 races.

They said since i'm a newbie, i should pick the horses.
The first 2, i picked the winners.
The last race i played the trifecta, and one on all 3.

I walked away with 500 or so dollars and those guys made a killing.
according to a fellow student at UM who worked at Dania Jai Alai, some schmoe used to snip parts of his fingers off to collect insurance to be able to keep going back…WT7?!..

How old is that photo? Looking at that TV.

She looks miffed.

Sometimes she 'vunts to be alone dolling'.... I just realized it's a rare pic of her raising her right paw! (in Ikea!) She was expressing; "this comes home with us dolling"

Yikes! that's a hard-core addict!

it’s RI….Maine Lobstah!..

Totally jealous! Love the crustacean! My 1st real job in HS was in an Italian restaurant as a bus-boy. Occasionally people would order 'surf & turf' (lobster & steak) and barely touch the lobster! We'd fight for scraps like that! :D

That’s actually a very sound way to handicap, track conditions and the horses experience in those conditions is very important.

The handicapping method I devised handicapped the horse, the rider and the track separately then had a wildcard category for each of those to account for things that just don’t show up on the race forms (horse takes a dump, Jockeys birthday, rail side of track more muddy than center track…).

Being an engineer and analytical to a fault, I had an entire excel spreadsheet that I developed with a number of formulas embedded, it was just a matter of plugging the race form data in and looking at the probabilities of each horse to win, place or show. I’d do that at home then adjust it trackside with the wildcard observations. This was pre Wi-Fi and internet days, so all the computer crunching was done on my desktop at home before I left for the track. Most of my losses came from horses that I had to substitute because my pick got scratched. Just going to the next highest rank horse isn’t always the right thing to do, some of those horses and riders and owners go out of their way to run defensively against other specific horses, and if that horse is no longer in the race it can change everything.

Geographically, they're close. I did some diving off Block Island (RI) from a dive boat that left from Montauk, Long Island.
