Thunderbird Club

'Well, la-dee-dar' sounds like an Archie Bunkerism. I have also felt the lash when I was young and it was usually well deserved.

When All in the Family came out - I felt like it was Dad and Mom. So very similar.

I won't deny that he beat me for a good reason. It just could have been less bloodthirsty. Mom always said he was beat by his father, and so it instilled this evil in him, which he then took out on me. Mom, being the Edith Bunker, mostly stayed out of the way. One day I managed to push her missile launch button - and she flung an empty saucepan at me. I made my Dexterity save, and dodged a blow to the head! I couldn't believe it!

One morning before school, I just wanted a bowl of cold cereal. Dad made oatmeal with lots of raisins in it. No cinnamon - just a big box of raisins. I was not fancying it. I made some comment, which drew his wrath. Pulled me out of the chair and whipped my behind with his belt. Dammit... on a school day... and I rode my bike to school.

I decided I'd had enough discipline, and upon leaving for school, I went the opposite direction. Rage quit. To Hollywood. My pal rode with me as wingman, but only part way, and he went back home. He did manage to talk some sense into me about preparations, etc. I got to Hollywood... checked out the comic book stores... and then got hungry. I had my meager lunch money - which would not buy you anything out in the real world. And like my pal said "Where will you sleep?" the reality of it all hit me. I was a runaway kid on the streets of Hollywood. So, tail between my legs, I headed all the way back home... and it was almost dusk.

School had called home to report me as truant. I forgot that would happen. So, I got whipped for that, and sent to bed without dinner. Suckiest day ever.

Not to beat a dead horse..but I’ve gone this far.
My Sparkling Burgundy tuner issue is over as far as me,Gibson and Sweetwater are concerned.
After several weeks of waiting for the second try to get the correct tuner replacements for my 23 NR.Gibson sent the correct tuners but no ferrules came with them. I explained to my SW rep that this is just like a nut and bolt. If one part, male or female is stripped the unit as a whole will not work.
SW was appalled (again) I made them an offer to buy the parts and fix it myself.
SW put back $318.00 onto my credit card for tuners and general hassle.
I’m still amazed that Gibson couldn’t get it right.

Anyway..as I have said before, these things happen to me all the time.No big deal.
Sweetwater stepped up to the plate after trying their best with the other company and made things right on my end.

Well that’s not so bad, other than the incredible delays by Gibson that should have been easy to resolve. Sweetwater has always come through for me. That’s why they’re my online retailer of choice. I will say though, that after watching the vid Ken posted the other day (I was thinking of you while watching it) I am surprised that they shipped that Thunderbird. And that the dedicated Gibson liaison couldn’t help more.

Anyway, you have a Thunderbird you like and it’ll give you many years of joy. PLAY IT LOUD!

My PB ‘91 NR gets the nod for some after work play today.

I never got whipped, he used to take his belt off and say "I really don't want to do this you know" or something like that, I made a lot more noise than it warranted. My father also grew up without his mother and my grandfather was not the most emotional man and made him do all sorts of chores all the time. He wasn't brutal to me though and it wasn't frequent.

Right!
Now!
Talking about bass guitars, especially Thunderbirds...

Well, urmh, I just couldn't...couldn't say no, you know...it was like it found me...it struck me...

GRECO TB first shots (1).JPG

Can anyone please tell me what it is? The seller said it could be a Greco or a Fresher (never heard of this brand before).

I finally put an X-tender on the Flamingo. It's pretty close to perfect now. It's Burgundy Mist Metallic, it has covers, it has chrome everything, it has Thunderbuckers, and now it has an X-tender. I played it with the band last night and really enjoyed how it sounded and felt, plus being able to drop to D on demand. I don't use it much, but it's perfect when you want to end a song on a low D.

It could be a Greco. That's not a Greco pickup, though.

My Dad had a rule... if the belt came off... it got used. There was no mercy. He was 6'6" and mastered the maneuvere of lifting me by an armpit with one arm, and removing his belt with the other hand, and as fast as drawing a sword. Like the Ghurkas... if they unsheathed their kukri knife... it had to draw blood. And if the enemy got away unscathed, you had to nick yourself before putting it back in the sheath. No lie.

Next two siblings were girls - so they were spared. And the youngest was a boy, but he never aggravated Dad or Mom. It was only me. Finally, in 7th or 8th grade, I pissed him off, and he went for my arm and the belt. I realized that I was bigger now, and so I bravely looked right into his eyes and said "Do it... DO IT... I don't care any more! Go ahead!"

And he let go of me, right there. I had shown no fear, I suppose, and it was not fulfilling for him any more.

In hindsight - it could have gone very bad - and he might've beat me silly. But I stood up to him. And I did make efforts to never upset him again in return.

There was no mercy.
I'm really sorry to hear things like that.
I always wondered how could anyone be so cruel to a person they should take care of.
It really brings tears to my eye.
You see, I got two kids and I NEVER felt like beating or even whipping them. I just can't imagine to do something like this.
I believe, that's the way.
You're right, you're a kid, you don't deserve treatments like that.
No need to be ashamed or anything like that.

any chance we can get a rehearsal sneak peek?

We have a day scheduled that we'll go through all three sets start to finish, I'll try to shoot some candids.

That is a wonderful set list. Might I suggest I Fought The Law? The Clash version of course.

I love their version, quite insane energy going on with it, but it's really a two guitar song and while Sophia is learning guitar she'll need to have a much better amp and a lot more confidence with the instrument before we really try something.

I have two kids of my own, and fortunately the rage discipline gene ended with my father. Only once did I spank my daughter when she did something bad - and I flashed back to when I was a kid - and I never did it again. They instead got a 'talking to' and/or privileges suspended.
