Very different sounds, but with different strings and pickup heights I expect that. They may have different cap/pot values, too.

Interesting how each of us like different TBird tones. I’m ecstatic with what I heard from the Studio. It will be my first long scale Reverse with TBird Plus pickups. It will be interesting to compare it to the ‘13 NR and the ‘11 shorty with TBird Plusses.

I think a proper setup will make a huge difference. There might only be a hair over 1/8” between the strings and neck pickup and a tiny bit more on the bridge.

That might actually be ok. I usually start at 4mm and move slightly up or down as needed for correct tone and volume balance. Sometimes a lot more further down is needed.

Really. Really Really really really. REEEEEALLLLLYYYY. 9 Guitars , 5 basses , 4 amps. I think I'm done. Collection complete. This sweet MIJ Aerodyne Special Stratocaster is icing on the cake. Really. I’ve stopped telling myself I’m done. I should be and actually need to be done, but at 26 basses and one very nice guitar (that I might learn to play a little someday), as well as 9 or so amps and cabs, I’m working harder to sell something before I buy something. Problem is at the moment I like everything I have. I have 2 basses listed and I think one will be selling this weekend. If it does, I’ll probably pull the other ad. I sold a V4 and cab last night and I would have went and bought a black studio Thunderbird with the funds from that, but… at least it’s here in the family.

I actually like my VP so much that I think I’m gonna buy a brand new black one. Good thing I’m in two bands and need three tunings. That’s why I need so many basses….

Definitely. It's also not too far off. A lot of people liken strings to shoes.

Darn, I have a lightly used set (I was told), that came on the NR I would have gladly sent you, Ken. I tried them again on the NR recently and they were still uninteresting for my tastes. The guy gigged it or used it a time or two and hated the Gibson strings and put the D'As on it. I've yet to like any of their strings. I would like to given they are pretty inexpensive with all the sales on them.

I used them when I first started playing because they were cheap, everywhere, and what did I know from feel or tone? The bass made low sounds. Fast forward to my big string experiment with the Thunderbird and wow I hated the scooped sound of the ProSteels. But thanks for thinking of me! Strings cut for a righty bass might not fit, anyway.

I don't say I won't buy another bass/amp/etc, because I know me and I know I will buy another. I do not NEED another bass or amp, but I WANT more. I do plan on selling a couple to eliminate some redundancy, but it can be difficult to decide which to sell because like you said, I like these basses. My usual method of selling is to choose several that I can live without, and then when one sells, I keep the others.

Excellent advice about just replacing the barrels, etc. But...what if tone is in the barrels? Or dare I suggest grub screws?

Yikes! I suspect the tone from the grub screws to be grubby and even more so if they’re old and worn. Likewise the old barrels may not hold water and essentially may be leaking all the good tone out of the bass. Chuck deserves nice tight barrels and spanking clean grubs.

Many people don’t know the significant impact barrel attributes (wood type, charred or not, aged, prior use, rotated vs still…) has on the storing and fermenting of its contents.

Barrel-aged stouts are a huge thing. And of course what they do with various whiskies. Of course Straight Bourbon is always new oak barrels.
