I've only had a problem once turning an amp off of standby and I had left it on standby for at least an hour, I had bought a used SVT and never checked the tubes, it blew a resistor in the output stage so most likely bad tubes, I changed the whole set after that, IIRC. But that's the only time in 50 years I had a problem. I've commonly left them on standby during breaks. I usually wait about a minute before turning them off of standby when I first turn them on.

Thanks Bob. I normally turn on and let it stay in standby for several minutes before taking it off standby. Turning off, I let set till the green light goes red, but longer if possible and never before. I accidentally left my V-4B AV on standby for about two days at church. That was several years ago.

The non-reverse got the VP pickups and it's almost like a new bass. Sounds a bit darker and chunkier than the VP (it has a bit older strings too). A comparison clips attached, pickup location picks here:

Yeah, or several ideas and hopefully some new ideas will pop up too.
I tracked some drums today at the rehearsal space. Very simple stuff with a crappy sound on purpose. Rundgren-early 70's style so the drums are very compressed and almost distorted. I doubletracked the part. It's not easy to play that slow but at least it's easy for me to play with me!

I recall sledding in the mountains of New Mexico, freezing our butts off, then sliding down sand dunes at White Sands an hour or two later, frying in the hot sun.

On average, y'all were comfortable.

Thanks, Miles! I know they only have so much life, and was never sure at what point of standby time it's just better to just turn it off.

When I was running a tube amp(pic), I flipped it to standby on our breaks-and at the end of the night while I packed the TBird, then off.

Chucky told me when shutting down to hit the E and let it ring as you throw the power switch. Then put it standby so you don’t forget the next time you power up.

Someday, I need to get one of those.....when I've got an extra $1k laying around unused

I want to replace the strings on both and do a complete setup on them. Any suggestions on strings for each one?

Personally, I like NPS strings, especially DRs - two of my Thunderbirds have neon red coated NPS strings from DR, one has Roto 66 nickels. I like the slightly less-brite-than-stainless sound they give

But, string choice is somewhat dependent on your sonic goals (and personal preference); there's a few guys on here that have done extensive string testing that can better explain the sound differences of other types of strings

Did you shut it off when you found it? The voltages rise when they're left on standby although I don't think it matters after a few minutes, it probably stabilizes and stays the same, there is a little surge when you take them off of standby, I don't think it's good for them to leave them on standby indefinitely although radio stations used to leave them on standby overnight.
I also don't think it really matters if you shut both off at the same time when you're done although I will wait a few seconds before killing the power before after turning the amp to standby. The standby is to get the filaments hot before you turn on the high voltage (turn standby to off), some people say no but most people believe if you turn on the power and standby at the same time it prematurely wears the power tubes.
