That's a good one - I've watched it before. '95 is around the time (early '94?) that I first saw/heard Nels with his Nels Cline Trio at the Hotel Utah. (where Bond Girl will be playing this coming Saturday night) I actually saw him with an Oakland based sax-player (duo-can't recall his name) the month before and he announced the upcoming trio show. The trio I was playing with at the time went and we were all blown away. I never saw Jimi Hendrix but what Nels & co did that Tuesday night (!) changed my life.

This LP is from that '93-'95 period - still one of my favorites. This trio is who I first saw Nels play with. I have a number of his 'out-of-print' CD's from the late '80s-early/mid '90s. Now that he's become more high-profile, maybe someone will do a box set of the early days.

I’m a huge Wilco fan and I expect his now twenty years with them has given him some financial freedom and the exposure to fund his other projects. A Nels boxed set would be wonderful!

I'd go as far to say it's needed as far a music history is concerned. Nels and his twin brother Alex grew up within the same period as you and I - they are only a couple years younger. Nels has always been a 'jazz/rock' player, and not 'fusion', or at least what was branded as such. I saw//heard him play about 10 yrs ago with the Nels Cline Singers (no singing!) at Cafe DuNord (since remodeled and frankly ruined) and Deerhoofs young guitarist John Dieterich sat in for a couple songs, one of which was "Boogie-Woogie Waltz" by Weather Report. When I heard it start, I was thrilled! Of course they nailed it! Afterwards Nels chided the 20-something guitarist by saying - "bet you never thought you'd ever play a fusion song!" The show was recorded and ended up on a CD, which I have. Next to Miles, I have a pretty big collection of Nels's CD and a couple LP's.

I wonder if anyone can help me. I obtained this short scale Thunderbird build and appears to have the initials MRG or Y and the date 9/19 on the back. It has Hipshot hardware and McNeeley pickups in it. Seems to be a total custom build. The previous owner got it as a trade and has no other information on it. Came from Columbus Ohio. Plays great. Any
information on it would be stellar but I’m stabbing in the dark here.

I have one. Quite unique sounding in the Tbird world, and quite a lot of unique build details as well. It will be at the GTG, you can give it a run. I will be modding it a bit with a custom designed pickup selector, but probably after I get back from the GTG.

OK. It arrived. It’s awesome, 18mm at bridge and 34”scale. Fantastic B string, plays great. I see what you all mean by articulate. The strings are dead dead dead and still every note is clear and punchy down to the low B. I do wish it were VBT instead of VVT, but whatever.

It has some kind of Daddarios on it (rounds, multicolored ball ends), and they are DEAD. My go-to strings are Nickel Lo-Riders. Will those do the job (defined, thick, aggressive, some spank and sparkle)? Any other suggestions?

Decided to do some weighing of a few basses. Bathroom scale weights. Seems a bit odd there are so many basses having the same weight, but I rechecked a few and added some weight with some to see if there was a change, so it seems the scale was not stuck on certain numbers--yet the results seem a little unlikely. Gives a close idea I suppose. I should have weighed the '76 a few times as I thought I recall it weighing 11# at one point. It's been years, so I may have confused it with something else (MMSR 5er maybe?). In the end, the bases I thought were lighter were.
55 – 8.6
64 P – 8.4
71 – 8.4
64 T’Bird – 8.4
06 T’Bird – 8.4
VP Burst – 9.7
76 T’Bird – 9.7
05 Pbass – 8.4
00 Hot Rod Pbass (Ash) – 9.7
Regenerate Modern 55 Pbass (Ash) – 9.7

Spent most of yesterday at the Gorge visiting friends and enjoying the Dead and Company show. I was fortunate to get seats center stage on the second level. As expected, it was a fantastic show. I was relieved when the sun started to set and the heat eased. They are almost at the end of the tour and they sounded great. Most of the songs became extended jams, and I particularly enjoyed the Estimated Prophet, Scarlett Begonias, Cumberland Blues section. Bobby sounded good, and traded leads seamlessly with John Mayer. Oteil Burbridge is an amazing bass player and tore it up all night on a 6 string Sadowsky. They are literally playing a second show while I write this, and then ending the tour with three shows in San Francisco. Wishing I was heading to the city by the bay, but glad I saw them at the Gorge. Would love to hear from anyone here who attends one of those shows. Have a great rest of the weekend.

Nice report, Border. Oteil is flat out amazing! I've heard him on some recordings and wonder how someone even plays like that. What he did with the Allman Bros didn't show what he can do. Even Tedeschi Trucks Band was not representative of what he's capable of.

The Butcherbird rises! Some of you might remember this bass, frankly I forget I had it. 2001 Gibson Thunderbird heavily modified and cutaway deepened touched up quickly and pressed into service as a stage bass, around 2008 with JOHNNY SMOKE. Original outfitted with '76 covers and rings with a Dimarzio Model G in the neck position and a empty cover in the bridge. Badass bridge then swapped to my Badbird II. I've had my way with it and sort or regret deepenig the cutaway , it certainly makes it mine though lol.
First I wet sanded all the touch up over spray of which there was quite a bit, then I polished, looks much better! Next I decided the Bicentennial covers and rings were to valuable (they will be going up on Ebay soon) to be on this bass so I replaced the rings and the empty bridge cover with unit that are readily available online. Gone is the model G in the neck replaced with a Epiphone 760 Probucker, the bass functions as a single pickup II. I really love the Probucker and the bass sounds amazing!!!! I'm really happy to reconnect with this bass and fine tune it's metamorphosis. As a side note the bass is lucky to be here. I almost smashed it onstage. Wildly frustrating show JOHNNY SMOKE did with Firehouse. I backed off last at the last second and it received a glancing blow, left the imprint of the tolex lol. View attachment 5119727

Could be some fun sorting it out and learning it. I foresee some shopping coming up for cables and other bits and bobs. Probably a bigger mixer to dedicate to the group. Already I think we will need a mic (or mics) if we are getting an amplified backing.
May also need a combo amp some where between the Rumble 15 and the 250w Eminar head and CX115 cab.

But I’ll try and make do with what I’ve got for the time being. At least while sorting out what works / doesn’t work for us.

Beyond the subjectivity aspect, some foods are definitely deceptive. I ordered some fish at a small place on the Al Gulf Coast yrs ago. Gravel parking lot and nothing impressive. When I received the order it looked like someone vomited on it. Literally. Possibly the worst looking thing I ever had in front of me. It was also one of the best things I've ever eaten. Then again, I've eaten more than enough food that tasted as bad as it looked.
