Around 2005ish I bought a brand spanking new blue burst G&L 2500 Tribute. Beautiful bass, very well built and claims about the control layout being a Swiss Army knife were not overstated. All that said, it’s one of the very very few basses I flipped shortly after buying (at a loss I might add). I personally found the Swiss Army knife controls a complete waste of time and totally unusable without resetting the EQ on every amp I played it through. In active mode the signal was just so darn hot it would clip every amp I owned and switching from it to another bass required a complete reset of the amp EQ. The passive output on the G&L was pure heaven, one of the best I’ve ever heard, but it was like having a Swiss Army knife with one good blade. Moved on, haven’t looked back.
Ouch, hope it wasn’t the one in front of the mic.

When I use a G&L (just have two), that's the one bass I do want to turn the bass up a bit on the head. I hardly ever touch my amp otherwise. G&Ls are so present that they seem to lack bottom, but I wonder if that might be because they have so much else going on that's so noticeable. They have their own sound and it's either a love it/leave it affair. They can easily "cut through" any situation, but that's not what I shoot for, and also why i suspect it didn't work for you. We both seem to like bigger smoother tones. G&Ls can be as rude as it gets. One of mine has GHS flats and that's a nice sound, also has the switch to turn the humbuckers into single coils. Like you, I much prefer passive. It's nice that if the battery dies you can still play with those. That's generally not the case IME.

Worked on this a bit yesterday and was thinking how great it would sound with Kristen singing it.
I like it when they mention how much over list price they paid for it, so you can feel like you got a deal...

Cool! We really don't do any '80s songs right now. Her voice is very similar. It's a bit long and not especially danceable, which is what we're trying to lean to these days. We'd have to get Paul's chorus pedal dusted off!
It's a one time process in which I remove whatever strings came on a bass and install Ernie Ball Cobalt Flats.
