Official leathers tester and crash dummy
I don't like 760 pickups as much as TB+ or Thunderbuckers. Maybe it's because of pickup location on the VP. A little closer to the neck gets them to sound a bit more like I like. It may go back to all the years when an EB-2 with a Dimarzio One was my only bass. It's a specific sound, and it's very different from what a VP with 760s sounds like.
There's a lot of art to pickups and pickup location that isn't obvious.
My experience with a 2001 Gibson is that there's some voodoo there that makes it just a hair better than anything else. I'm not sure what they had going at the time, but there it is. At least on my 2001. I would expect the magic to still be there even with the modifications.

An update on TSC's drummer-less situation etc - my craigslist ad isn't coming up with much yet, a couple nibbles but not good matches. (no-one listens to our provided music) We have three shows on the calendar - we'd have more but I've turned down a few since Zach left. I contacted our old drummer Steve who now lives in Santa Cruz and he's agreed to fill in. (yay!) One show in August, one in Sept - both 45min sets at Winters' which we can definitely rock. We have another gig in Sept - a 3 set night in Richmond Point. If he's willing, we should be able to pull that one off also. He'd have to learn a number of our newer songs but he should able to do that. Even if we find a drummer between now and then - it's unlikely they would be ready to do 3 sets. (30 songs - 10 per set)
Also, last week I met with the guy who will master our LP/CD/digital. It ends up there will be 11 songs on the LP, and 16 songs on the CD. To achieve optimal sound quality on an LP, only 18-20 mins per side. The CD of 16 songs will be around 53mins. I scheduled for July 25th. Cover artwork will be pretty basic - and the same for the LP & CD. The back will list the songs/times and have a montage of small photo's of the band over the years.
(background is black - couldn't get a pic w/o glare) A bit like "Smell the Glove"... none more black!

Don’t know how they’re wired, but if I could set up a set of G&L humbuckers in passive mode only with a master volume, V/T, V/T knob layout I’d be in seventh heaven.
my rig right behind me on top of the Rumble (which sounded awesome btw) started making unhappy noises at Daisy's the night before.....thought it may have been an amp issue but it got worse with a different amp (head) at yesterday's jam.....just goes to prove nothing is bulletproof....slapping the he11 outta the bass prolly didn't help...

Actually not funny. Hate to hear that. I don't think I ever fried a speaker. I replaced one in a Peavey 215 once, due to some misuse by the previous owner. Made for a good deal for me.

I have the same experience with my 2001. Just something different with it, but can't explain what.

Never having tried either, I’d personally take the Rex over the Simmons. Just looks so much more tastefully done. But I wouldn’t spring for much over $1500 on either one of them. Too many other great birds out there to choose from once you get above that price point.
