Thunderbird Club

They look a lot like the 76 Bird pickup covers I have.

Speaking about sidewinder-ish pups to young Master Pup Builder today and his immediate response was that the Philly Luths pup covers wouldn't be deep enough - they're only 12mm.
He suggested, for lack of an available case/cover, he has epoxy moulds that are definitely deep enough.
In the first instance I'm'a get the loose RexBird pups potted into gold Philly Luths covers, second I'll get some like the new NR pups but with whatever adjustment needed for a tiny bit extra rump response into chrome covers.
Then I'm curious about the sidewinders ..

@godofthunder59 had a set of original sidewinder covers he was trying to sell a few months back.

Once you become a 'Bird person, it's hard to play anything else. At least that's how it worked for me. I have three non 'Bird shaped bass guitars. None of them gets played much. The EB-2 is semi-retired. The EB and Precision just don't leap into my hands for some reason. Especially if there's a Thunderbird around.

It doesn't happen to everyone that way.

I may change my statement once my bird is back in working order for good (lots of work to be done Dx), but so far my precisions & other basses always reign supreme. in the decade + of owning my bird, i've probably played it extensively a handful of times, whereas my precisions (all copies, i own no real 7ender aside from an old squier branded affinity series of 2004) have been recorded, gigged, & played countless hours. I guess my big reason was mainly due to not having proper transport for the bird (& even in the coffin case, its only been recorded on my band's first album on 2/6 songs, pbass 3/6, one song is done with my ric copy). I bond with it every time i pick the bird up, but it doesn't stick for a full hour of playing. It felt too specific in comparison, & as of late, with the deep sixx pickups definitely too dark vs all my other gear. So in with an extensive upgrade (pickups & bridge, perhaps tuners, though the latter for debate). & now with the extensive work i'll need to do (which i'm like 85-90% i'll have to strip all the paint/artwork i've done to refurbish in entirety for good :( ). Once that's all done, i'm sure my opinion of once a bird person, hard to play anything else.

Not a bass, but in case someone is a collector of old stuff.

The Artec mudbuckers are sidewinders and they have wider string spacing than the original mudbuckers.
I have one I keep meaning to try in something.

I go back and forth depending on my music projects. I've used my VP for most everything, but it's a little big for small stages.

If only we knew somebody who knew somebody in this group...
Sad to say; that "somebody" ain't me. The Guitar/Bass Dept. manager at the Sam Ash in Las Vegas, was my connection. He had "just a phone call away" contacts at Gibson, and he was very aware of the dearth of left handed stuff - especially basses. He's the guy that ordered my '13 T-Bird for me. He also got me my my '18 T-Bird. Which, for reasons I won't go into, and really had nothing to do with the bass, I sold to a fellow T-Bird member here, in...2021? I forget. Since I moved here 3 years ago, I don't have an "in" with Gibson anymore. TBH, it doesn't bother me; my bass herd is full; a Thunderbird was really the only Gibson bass I ever wanted; and, 25 basses is... plenty for this old player...
