Thunderbird Club

So other than being really hot, how did the Sixx pickups sound. You probably answered, but if so I missed it or forgot, in which case my apologies.

Well being really hot as they were, they were, if i compare to my other gibson style basses (since all my pbasses basically have the upper midrange clarity against the bird), the deep sixx pickups were dark in nature. a little top end, that if i pushed my dirt boxes to their extreme, i could get clarity in the bird, but then all the low end would be gone (or least subdued enough to not be perceived, or really felt).

If i needed a solid just heavy clean rock bass, it could handle the job. However given the music i write for/in my band is such a wide range, i've tended to gravitate towards my pbasses (& if i wanted a darker tone, i'd just roll off their tone knob). & my Ripper build & 75 Grabber deliver a better bite & low end mix vs the DS loaded Bird.

It's kinda like one of my pbasses - it had a duncan Hot for Pbass since forever, & it did the trick of giving me a hotter old school type pbass pickup. But for the last 2-3 years, i've barely played it since the other pbasses are more open sounding, & feel more in line with my overall bass tone. This past Monday, i've swapped the Duncan pbass pup (17K) for a Pegcity Pbass pup (11k). The Pegcity has opened up the tone way more than i expected, & the midrange is clear & as bity as my other pbasses (which their pickups are in a similar output range 10-12k). So just like those Deep Sixx epiphone pickups, the Duncans will end in a project bass that'll be sold off afterwards as I've no need at all.

@shifty

That looks like someone has already made some mods (you?). I assume the finger prints are a theft recovery measure. :laugh:

My guess is that it is a Epi Pro IV refinished, new knobs and new pickups or at least new pickup covers.
It should also have a battery box on the back.

If you don’t like the pickups in it and or the preamp, there are other pickup options. At the moment the best ‘bang for buck’ seem to be the chrome vintage pickups that Gibson are selling. That’s my thought from reading the opinion of TBirders that have them. Someone may weigh in on that.
Theft prevention. You have to match the fingerprints or the bass has no output. Latest feature.

I'll be gol-durned, the was a white Thunderbird II on the Country Music Awards tonight. You mean to tell me a Thunderbird can do country? Seriously?
Just as planned. A wonderful 1964 I'm thinking. Even got some close ups. He hadn't used it live yet and that may have been it's first outing. I'll have to check to see what he thought.

Great song and some amazing bass playing as well. Which we all know makes songs.

I'm not a big fan of modern country (post 1978), but I saw him perform with Willie on the R$R hall of fame thing and I may give him a listen....

I like Dwight Yoakam, and that's as modern as I get... I'm not even a Hank Jr, or George Straight fan.... What year did the "outlaws" album come out? maybe the last good country album... country music died with Boxcar Willie...

I'm not a country person either, but really like their music. Kind of raw, earthy and the songs tell a story you can understand--and the music is great. Chris is a phenomenal songwriter which is why he's written hits for a number of people. Seems like a lot of people want to record and sing with him as well. Won male vocalist of the year last night as well. Ain't bad.
