I brought it to the GTG but it didn’t get much play time (the output jack had gone wonky, all better now).
Imagine if you will, a set of crystal clear classic Bartolini humbuckers each with its own volume control, going thru a two band onboard preamp with 18db of cut and boost for each individual band, driven through a coil split switch to allow both humbucker and single coil options, while playing La Bella black tapes.
Put the switch in humbucker mode, twist the treble knob to 18db cut and the bass knob to 18db boost, then crack open just the neck pup volume for a glorious wooly dub type tone, crank the volume to 5 and it’ll bring the house down. Now switch to single coil mode soloed on the bridge pup with the treble knob boosted and the bass knob centered (no bass cut or boost) and you’ve got pure Jaco quack, boost the bass a bit and slightly favor the neck pup for a Duck Dunn sound.
I’m normally a pure humbucker guy, but I have to admit, when playing this bass I’m in single coil mode more than half the time because it’s just so crystal clear, articulate and piano like. The black tapes play a big role in getting that zero finger and fret noise sound for articulate piano like solos, the preamp offers a monstrously broad tonal range and the coil split gives the bass a Jeckel and Hide personality that doubles the already huge sound palette.
I’ll bring it up the next time I’m in your area and drop it off with you for a couple of months. It’s a really fun bass to noodle on but maybe too flexible for a live gig where fewer knobs and less drastic sound changes are a good thing.
