Thunderbird Club

And somehow I ended up winning a silent auction for an original poster from the 1966 Beatles show at Shea Stadium, signed by the promoter.

Ok... Thunderbird pickups. I'm looking to replace one or both of the pups in my Epi CP. I wasn't something with more clarity, a bit more detail and top end.
I'm using a GK 800RB, into an 8x10 fridge loaded with 50-watt Jensen Mods, or a smallish 215 with Eminence Kappalite 3015s.
I find, after lots of playing time, the Thunderbucker+ in there now don't quite stand up in the mix the way I'd like to hear. They tend to be a little 'dark' to the point of 'blurry'.

Not too worried about $, I'm doing this instead of getting a second 'Bird...

I appreciate your guys' thoughts...
What strings do you have on it? Strings may solve the problem.

I have Lollars, Gibson re-issues, Novaks, Thunderbuckers 66’s (unavailable now), and Gemini Devastators in various Gibson ‘birds.

I like the Gibson re-issues a lot but they are chrome, not nickel, so that was a factor in my case since I changed all the hardware on that bass from black, and I had to be sure the get chrome rings, Babicz, and Hipshots.

The Lollars are probably my first choice.

The Novaks are good, but the bass they are in is the only ‘bird with flats at the moment so I can’t quite compare.

The Thunderbuckers I have, which I do not know if they are 63’s or 66’s (and I don’t know if I can ever find out), are a bit bass heavy, but I wouldn’t say dark. Overall, really nice sounding, I just need to dial back the lows a touch when I use that one.

The Gemini Devastators are in my black VP and I really haven’t played that one much since I put them in, but my first impression was underwhelming. I’m not sure, it could be the bass, so far nothing I have put in that black VP has impressed me yet, and it could be that that black VP isn’t for me. My other, white, VP is excellent and it’s still running stock 760’s, so I’m not sure what magic is in the white one that the black one seems to be missing.

I put Lollar's in my T-Bird a long time ago and really love them. To my ear, they do what your asking.

I had also tried the Chinabuckers in a jazz bass/P Bass project but found them lacking in low end comparatively.

I swapped them out with a set of Lollar's and that problem was solved. Its in no way scientific or definitive but I really like the ones I have.

They also pop up used, from time to time, on Reverb.

Again, Lollars! I have them in two ‘birds, one standard tune and one tuned D standard and both are good, well balanced and solid sounding basses.

This is definitely most fabulous - really funny to see they didn't have a matching treble side set of Grovers so there are two slightly different sets of machines on there (they look spot on from the front - certainly not an issue, just amusing), but I absolutely love the solution to the bridge/string anchoring. I think I'm'a make meself a 8 string - tho I'll prob use the Steinberger "banjo" style tuners for the octave strings, light and out the way
I thought exactly the same thing looking at the bridge:D
But the person who made the truss rod cover needs to be demoted back to sweeping the floor.
What in the HEdoublehocketsticks?

You tease!
Seems to be the way around here.

NGD! I never thought I'd go this route, but it became pretty obvious I'd be waiting indefinitely for another run of lefty basses. Watching the Johnny Marr interview on That Pedal Show inspired me to rethink guitar and relearn it. It's been ages. Gibson originally offered me a guitar, but I wasn't interested at the time. But now I'm excited. They were backordered until the Spring, but yesterday I was looking at something at the Gibson site and went over to this '61 Standard page and saw lefties in stock. I emailed my contact and he confirmed they did do an unexpected run and said I should be receiving this today and sent me a tracking number. I thought he meant the tracking number, but it was out for delivery. What a surprise.
