Thunderbird Club

Thanks for the help all. Will try the Hipshot bridge then.

Any links or recommendations for a new strap button so I can place on the back? Want to cure neck dive.

Are Greco tuners easy to replace btw? Any drop in replacements?

New to the modding stuff. Pickups are not even and a little wonky. Worried about the truss rod too. Haven’t checked it yet.

Thought about returning it and investing in a real Gibson thunderbird if I start spending more on mods. I paid about a grand for the Greco used.

you could just move the old strap button.

The Greco tonal magic is in the pickups and their locations on the bass. What do you mean by “not even” and “wonky”?

why are you worried about the truss rod?

80% of the sound of a Stingray comes from the preamp imho….integral part of it’s character….which begs the question, has anyone heard a passive one? I would love to…

I have one:

Since it's TT the other basses in the pic did not need to be edited out...
It's not MM but has a (almost too) heavy ash body and a maple neck and a passive no-name MM -style humbucker in the right position. Vol, tone and a series-parallel-switch. Especially in the parallel mode the sound is just right and if you want that extra high end clank/sizzle you can add an outboard eq or pre-amp.
I mainly use it in series mode.

Here's a clip in which I did some Levin -style things:

Okay, it looks like July is going to be the month for the Seattle GTG, my goal is to be off from work 7/23-8/2 in total thinking we'd have most folks between 7/25-7/29. I'd figure we can plan some day activities as we figure who will be here and when. Lots to do, music stores to visit, Airplane museum, maybe a visit to Bill's to see some excellent '60-70 Pontiacs and BSA's. The Thunderbirds and amps will be in the basement, The Nasty Habits could come over and you guys can play along, using my basses and amps. I live near Sea-Tac so lots of places to stay nearby, lots of food too! Please feel free to PM me :)

 May we assume that pic wasn't taken today?

Looks like I’ll be solo. Just need to see how to get the VP turned ‘64 IV up North.

From a post over in the Gibson Club thread:
nothing but speculation on my end. I’m guessing colored SG basses like they did for the guitars this year.

did hear from a dealer they are going to discontinue the gene Simmons TBird. Also my friend who works on the factory floor said they’ve been making the non reverse birds like crazy lately. Nothing new though on the bass front that he shared. But he isn’t allowed to share new products. So who knows.

I’ve been watching that one. IF it’s still around in Feb/March, I might pull the trigger. Once I wrap up the three jobs I’m working, then I MIGHT be able to get it.
 What V said. But I find I don't need loud or really pushing it to get good tone from my '76--but V and I don't shoot for the same tone target or and similar rigs.

I would add that if you find something offered as a '76 to check the serial numbers (as V mentioned). Often if that range of bass has a '76 pick guard (the feet), people think it's a '76. That pick guard was was used well beyond 1976, how far I don't know. I messaged a seller on Reverb the other day who was advertising a Thunderbird as a '76 when it was not. I mentioned to him I was just wanting to help avoid a person buying a '76 and looking at the S# or pot codes and finding it is not--and then not having warm feelings toward him. In fact, I've done that a few times with sellers. They either don't reply and keep it listed as before or say "thanks for the info" but keep the listing as is. I think most list simply not knowing and is an honest mistake. When it's been suggested the seller might want to run the numbers/codes and still persists with incorrect listing info, I kind throw out the "honest mistake" part.... So do your own homework, as V said.

Hey there, I'm new and I just got an Epiphone Thunderbird bass and I'm loving it. I've heard if you get a thick strap it can fix the neck dive but I'm not sure. Do any of you know?
Likely well answered by now, but.... Get a nice strap that will offer some resistance to your shirt, unlike slick leather or plastic, but wider leather will help. Suede (backed) is what I use and works perfectly. A nice leather strap like that will also conform to your shoulder and help a little more. Honestly, it can be a problem and some Thunderbirds are prone to it more than others--some not at all. It's a "problem" worth addressing, and fortunately it can be done fairly easily.

Apologies for the mess around the bass but I just received this bass today. I’m absolutely loving it so far!
Those are excellent Thunderbirds and are the best Thunderbirds that Gibson/Epiphone has made since the 60s. Also likely one of the worst in terms of neck dive due to the massive headstock. Keep playing it and it will begin to feel normal--with a good strap. Even the next best sounding and non-vintage Thunderbird would cost you more money. Well done!
