Thunderbird Club

I’m one of the bottle opener headstock haters. I like the old headstock. Recall that I’m very shallow. But I’ve liked the G&Ls I’ve played. I understand you have to take a good look at the neck when buying used as some have a rep for developing issues. But I figure if it hasn’t happened yet on an old one, it won’t.

Here I am talking other basses when I need to head into the shed for practice. The ‘15 is calling me……
I get it. It does look weird. Maybe that was some of the point of it after Fender got ruffled. No pun intended. Yes, you are correct. Some had the ski jump issue, just how common I'm not sure. I suspect you are right on the development of the issue, the exception maybe someplace very humid could trigger it I suppose, but doubt it would happen if it hasn't already. Fortunately mine is just fine.

Root beer? Looks great!
Thanks, Miles.
Looks like paint from much of a distance. Fortunately it is not.

Jeez. I woke up this AM and got ready to go do chores at the mountain place. But the weather had other ideas so I stayed here and hung out with you guys. Now I’m considering two non-Thunderbirds that I’d love to own.

Got to resist. Got to resist. Got to resist.

No you don't.

Where did you get the bit of nonsense? Certainly not here.;)

Thanks. It was the one G&L I really wanted. I saw it and showed my wife how nice it looked and she said make an offer. After getting up off the floor I did. I hate the versions with the black crinkle finish on the bridge and control plate. This one is in fantastic shape. I have a couple other G&Ls and they do not sound like this one. Of course it has the old style pickup and the body is magic Mahogany. The neck is wonderful to play. Kind of right in between a Jazz and a Pbass I guess you could say.
Uh, your WIFE better not see this pot Donnie.

Well, getting one has been on the list. I’ve researched them and will likely add one someday.

So I put the Gibson reissue pickups in my Orville today. Definitely more "60s Tbird" sounding than the 91 TBPlus that were in it.
Then I thought hmmm, how about running it as a II, with just the one pickup?…
I bypassed the bridge pot/pickup and it actually does have a little more high end (without the extra pot loading it down). I could happily just play it like that:D
I’ll probably install a pull pot to take out the bridge pot and pickup. If I can find one to fit.

exactly….heating components too long can damage them…..don’t get me wrong, I’m a total proponent of “if it looks better it works (sounds) better” but there are times when that doesn’t work and “ugly” is the way to go….;)
For sure!
I was trained by old English radio techs. They were ex BBC/CBC, so we got a tour of the CBC transmitter on Seymour Mountain and back of house at the CBC building in Van.

Unfortunately, FL is very humid.
Fortunately, I have no interest in anything not labeled Epiphone or Gibson.
(Yeah, I know-my semi-hollow is an Ibanez 'cos I couldn't afford an EB-2 or Rivoli and I don't like the looks of the JC)
