Still flats or are you thinkin' round wounds? For rounds, probably Dunlop Super Brights.D’Addario Chromes?

That's a tough one because people say that the Cobalt Flats sound close to a round. So would it be an extremely bright round or a very dead-sounding flat?Quick question for the string gurus out there - sound wise, what bass string would be the polar opposite to an Ernie Ball Cobalt Flat?
The reason I’m asking is because I’m running a bit of a test here to see just how much different I can make two roughly identical basses sound with just a string change, and conversely, can I EQ the two different string basses to sound roughly the same with just the onboard passive controls or playing technique. In this case, I have two Goth basses I’ll use for the test.
You know me, always experimenting, should be fun. Will try to post the sound results.
I can see that….al least it wasn’t a microphone…..A bass cab.
tried EBCF and they’re nothing like rounds imho…That's a tough one because people say that the Cobalt Flats sound close to a round. So would it be an extremely bright round or a very dead-sounding flat?

At first thought for rounds, maybe something round core Boomer RCs, Sunbeams, etc. Pure nickels of some kind also might be the opposite of the aggressiveness of the EBCFs. All the above would have great lows, some soft highs but subtle mids, in my experience.Quick question for the string gurus out there - sound wise, what bass string would be the polar opposite to an Ernie Ball Cobalt Flat?

Makes me mad.Dig that stache-sideburns thing you had going on!
That peninsula is a lot of fun on the 4th of July. They blow up everything they can get their hands on for hours and hours and hours. I hate to think what it all costs. It's spread over pretty much everyone who lives there, and a lot of visitors. They whole beach, from one end to the other, is full of people setting things off. It isn't little stuff, either. It's a miracle the beach grass in the dunes and the scrub pines don't get lit up.love Long Beach WA….never went in the water though….

It's that whole ymmv thing.
Personally, it's the only strings out there right now that i really favor.
You're going to have a solid week of .73 Tortex picks and various Rounds this Summer, there hasn't been a set of Flats in my house for at least 15 years now.

I never looked that cool.
But Jeff is hard to dislike so I don't hold it against him.
Did you run both tubes with the same settings? In that, I agree you can hear the difference, but the lower grain tube will sound the same as the higher grain tube if you just push it a little harder, or push the other a little less. What were the original power tubes?
Can't say I've ever swapped different types of power tubes before, but I've spent more than my fair share of time b rolling preamp tubes and I can 100% tell you there is definitely a difference in them. Mostly in the gain structure that comes up. But I can tell you that I've heard differences in different 12ax7's, 12at7's, and 12au7's. When comparing the same types of tubes, the differences were slight but there.
BUT.... I conducted the very scientific test of putting good headphones on my 7 yr old daughter and splicing recordings of two tubes together so they played the same parts seamlessly. You could tell when each was playing by a different color on the track (one teal and one blue). I told her, "tell me if the teal and blue are the same sound or if they're different. There's no right or wrong it's just what it sounds like to you." Two bars per tube. By midway through measure 7 she was saying, "the blue is better. The blue is better for sure. I like it more."
When I stopped it I asked her why she liked the blue one. Her response was CLASSIC. "They were the same but the blue one made me feel different. Like that's where the magic happens. It just made me feel better. I didn't know."
She has no musical training whatsoever but she picked out the Raytheon 12ax7 made in Japan from 1970something over the brand new JJ 12AX7. I honestly didn't think she would hear any difference, but there it was.
