Thunderbird Club

I love that bass so much because of what went into it. She told me, "I actually looked up basses and it looked like you had Precision basses and a Musicman. And everything I found said you also needed a jazz bass and I had never seen you with one so I picked that one."

She actually researched them, found a hole in my arsenal, and got me something for that. Problem is, the hole was intentional since I couldn't play 1.5" necks for long gigs without my left hand cramping up and I never got along with Jazz Basses tonally when a band was involved. Sounded incredible on their own, but meh with a band. P's were the opposite for me. Sounded meh by themselves but great with a band. Now the Lull TBird, sounds damn good by itself and damn good with a band. P, Bird, and MM can cover most any ground I would ever want to.
What a great story. Keeper, for sure. Sounds a little similar to something my wife might do. She did find and buy the white '76.

Paul Turner gets some great tone from his Jazz. Maybe look into his signal chain.

…takes a special kind of woman to love a bass player. I think they must have to like cats too….

That's just been the case my whole life. Regardless of rig and pedals. J's just never did anything for me. Now I run through a Kemper and can get the vibe of damn near any rig I want and still, the J's just aren't my cup of tea I guess. Can't get rid of the bass so I'm gonna find a way to get something out of it eventually.

My wife didn't know I was a bass player until it was too late. BWAHAHAHAHAHA!

She's allergic to cats. Horribly allergic to them. So no cats. Oh, well.

Have you looked into stacked humbuckers?

Not a tone I'd use, but fits what they're doing. I've heard J's sound great, but it seems a lotta players, especially jazz cats, go for that all mids tone that I find...uh,...(what's the word?)... AH! Annoying.

Good evening Thunderbird loving sisters and brothers. I hope everyone has enjoyed a relaxing weekend. My new position took effect Friday the 1st, and I have been crazy busy ever since. Still very happy and excited to begin this new chapter in my life and career. Thinking about a new bass, maybe to leave at the office, to just pick up and noodle on during trying moments. I have been enjoying my semi hollow bodies lately, and was wondering about the Guild Starfire. I am wondering if they have always been short scale? I have never owned a short scale and am uncertain about them. This old pic of Phil looks long scale, but may just be my perception. Yes, I am a fan of the Grateful Dead and Phil in particular, just wondering if anyone may have any thoughts on the Guilds.
Thanks much folks, I hope you all have a good evening. Go Zags.
I’m only aware of short scale Starfires, but they do sound great. I played one back to back with a Fender Starcaster Modern Player and liked the Fender much more. Both are short scales but really don’t take any time to get used to. Here’s a shot next to my Gibson Memphis Gold Top…

We may shoot for different tonal objectives, but I had the same problem. I've got two nice Js, but they never wowed me. Kind of, meh. I put some SIT Power Wounds (NPS) on the '62 and it came to life. Not nasally or hallow. Very nice and a joy to play. Currently I have SIT Power Steels on the '71 and while kind of a different animal, it also became very enjoyable to play. I look forward to using them now.

I call that all mids J sound nasal and whiney. My brother, who is a Jazz guy, calls it articulate. Articulate? Like Woody Allen?

I'm [relatively] certain that string/amp/EQ choices make a monstrous difference in tone. And the player's preferences. That nasally, honky sound associated with them can be tamed. The one I played in a 'sitting in' situation sounded OK to me. Just felt a little weird compared to my NR.
