I call that all mids J sound nasal and whiney. My brother, who is a Jazz guy, calls it articulate. Articulate? Like Woody Allen?

That's brilliant!Do you like the Kleins? I have a "62s" (I think it was) set in a '64 Pbass. It had '67 pickups in it and they sucked as far as I was concerned. I bought '64 pots and ordered the pickup from Klein's, but some Pyramid Gold flats on it and it's fantastic now. Love it.I love my Jazzes, but they do not have stock pickups.
For years my ‘70 had a SD 1/4 pounder setup. Now I have Lollars in most, and Kleins in one.
your brother is right…. of the humble opinion that many dislike it because you can’t hide slop behind that tone…..I call that all mids J sound nasal and whiney. My brother, who is a Jazz guy, calls it articulate. Articulate? Like Woody Allen?
no more pup cover?'67 NR w/ 45-100 EBCFs in Coffin(TM) Case=all I really need(well, that and an amp...and the cable).View attachment 5382187
One of the best J tone's that I've found is from Mike Levine. This maybe isn't the best example for computer speakers. Big thick bass with some punch. Not a tone I'd use, but fits what they're doing. I've heard J's sound great, but it seems a lotta players, especially jazz cats, go for that all mids tone that I find...uh,...(what's the word?)... AH! Annoying.![]()
Let's not go there. And in some cases, a nightmare.

Too late.Let's not go there.
Took the hand rest thing-y(<technical term)off awhile back. Carefully saved to most likely re-install in the near future. More experimentation needed.no more pup cover?

For myself, I wanna hear the bass notes, not the sameness of the kick drum. As @dagrev points out, Bass is* the original Surround Sound-IMNSHO.your brother is right…. of the humble opinion that many dislike it because you can’t hide slop behind that tone…..
My wife knew I was. Trouble is she thought like my mother, when she married my full time working jazz musician dad. That is was something that would pass and he would get a straight job. He kept playing music, they divorced. He continued to play music, the only job he ever had, and died as a full time musician. My wife didn't know I was a bass player until it was too late. BWAHAHAHAHAHA!
She's allergic to cats. Horribly allergic to them. So no cats. Oh, well.
Yeah, I'm not sure what an early 60s Pbass should sound like, but it sounds worlds better than the '67 pickups that were in the bass. Unusable for me. I sold them on TB and the guy loved them. Nearly paid for my pickups and correct year pots and cap. I think Klein hit on a unique way of going about making a repo vintage pickup that no one else is doing AFAIK. A bit of an odd dude, however. In my emailing him and asking questions he was helpful, but signed off in email as "Mr. Klein." I kind of wanted t laugh, and say, Dude, I'm a fair amount older than you...I'm the one who should be going by and called "Mr." if we're going to do the fancy dance thing." I recall he never replied to @GBassNorth when he inquired about a possible Thunderbird pickup. I think I have that right. That I don't don't like. You're in business. At least take 30 seconds and reply that you are not interested.Yes, I think they might bring my ‘70 Jazz and ‘72 P maybe closer to their original intended tone(?), but I have no recollection what either of these sounded like stock. The J pickups are lost to history from when I pulled them out in ‘93 when I got it(that’s when the SDQP’s went in it) I’m not even sure if the P had its original pickup when I got it back in ‘95-‘96.
But, I did have to change from a .022 to a .047 cap in the J with the Kleins, it was way too bright and harsh with the .022. I may change the .047 in the P to a .1, which may be what it had in it originally.

SBL did the five most iconic basses of all time. Thunderbird wasn't in it, but they talk about it in its honorable mention.
FYI, never received the Gorgomyte and it's been a month. I wrote to JJ and if no response, I'll just cancel once again. From PayPal:
