Thunderbird Club

I'm [relatively] certain that string/amp/EQ choices make a monstrous difference in tone. And the player's preferences. That nasally, honky sound associated with them can be tamed. The one I played in a 'sitting in' situation sounded OK to me. Just felt a little weird compared to my NR.

Most of the Fenders I've played didn't do it for me. There was a J I liked, and not just for the neck. It was going through a REDDI directly to the board. Pretty sure it was stock, but no idea what year or what strings were on it.

Anyone have an idea for a bridge replacement that is drop in? The current EB style bass has a 2 piece bridge and the bottom plate limits how low you can go. The bottom plate also is what is threaded for the adjustment bolts.

I'm in Houston, but using Pirate Ship I can't imagine a body costing more than $20-$25 to ship. I'm guessing a Router is gonna run me $150-170, $50-70 for a bit set, and $20-30 for a template. That's ballpark $250ish. Eh.... $50 in shipping and labor I'm probably gonna end up not far off of that mark....
I'm in Canaduh, so it would get too spendy. Maybe something @JIO would do?

You're certainly very smart, and I don't mean to imply otherwise, but any of the wives from here ever meeting and talking could be disastrous. :smug:

"No more basses for you, young man...."

And.... "I forbid you from hanging around those people. Bad influences, them all."

"And did I mention no more basses...."
My wife thinks this club is great!

Side note, for anyone that was interested... I need about 9/16" clearance to a TBird pickup on my J Bass with 5/64" pickup to string spacing. I only have just shy of of 1/2" on the bridge pickup so the neck is definitely nowhere near. A BIG shim would be necessary to work that. That being said.....

I've got a jazz bass my wife bought me years ago that I just have never been able to get along with. I got the playing sorted out with a Duff McKagan P neck but the tone still just does nothing for me. I've tried the stock fender pickups, Bartolinis with and without John East Preamp, and EMGs. The EMGs look absolutely sick, but the tone just never does anything for me. So why not route it out and wedge some Seymour Duncan Custom Shops in there? Anybody in here like running a router? I know better than to trust myself with chisels and a hammer. LOL

A router is a very useful power-tool. My recommendation would be buying one and learning how to use it. A band saw is also very useful - having one allows you to make your own router templates. But you can also buy ready-made templates from Stew Mac.

But.., a go-around would be using a drill (a drill-press even better) with forstner bits to create the cavity (removing most of the wood) and yes, using a sharp chisel to square it off. It can be done and done neatly if you are patient.

This is an example - overlapping the diameter of the forstner-bit leaves very manageable remaining wood that's easily chiseled off. This was for a control-cavity - for a pu, aside from hollowing most of it out like my pic, you would also use a regular drill-bit the diameter of the rounded-off corners at the four corners. Best to play with a slab of wood first to get the hang of it.

My wife knew I was. Trouble is she thought like my mother, when she married my full time working jazz musician dad. That is was something that would pass and he would get a straight job. He kept playing music, they divorced. He continued to play music, the only job he ever had, and died as a full time musician.

Me, I continued to play bass but I did get a straight job, still played music though. Still am.

:)
I’m not sure we’ve talked about the GTG this summer Deej. Veronica is hosting it in Seattle 7/24 to 7/31. I’m arriving the 25th and leaving the 29th. It would be great to meet you if you’re able to make the drive up.
