It’s Magnet Monday!!!
Just for Sh**s and Giggles here’s some interesting comparisons on what’s under the hood of various Tbird and Gibson offerings…

Gibson NR with stock Tbird Reissue pickups
View attachment 5397108 View attachment 5397109

2017 VP with 760Probuckers, maybe a bit shy on that string E coverage, but doesn’t seem to effect the sound.
View attachment 5397110 View attachment 5397111

BlingBird with ChinaBuckers, nice string coverage and pretty neat looking
View attachment 5397112 View attachment 5397113

Gibson 2015 Tbird
View attachment 5397114 View attachment 5397115
It’s the only bird that imparted noticeable magnetic pull on the strings when fretted at the last fret (note the measuring film sitting on top of the strings, not directly on top of the pickup like the previous picture).
View attachment 5397117

Dingwall DBird with three narrow spaced split coils)
View attachment 5397118 View attachment 5397119

Black Goth with a wee lack of QC (magnets placed in epoxy at odd angles) it’s my best sounding Goth, so maybe it’s a “feature”
View attachment 5397120 View attachment 5397121
My silver Goth seems to be better aligned but doesn’t sound quite as good.
View attachment 5397122

Where would we be without a BaCH? The Artec pups actually look pretty good.
View attachment 5397123 View attachment 5397124

Gibson Les Paul Memphis semi hollow body, surprise - six poorly aligned relatively weak (guitar) magnets under that bass housing. Sounds fine but I bet it would sound killer if better pickups were used.
View attachment 5397126 View attachment 5397127
Had to get a shot of the bridge pickup because the E (or is that a guitar B) string pole didn’t hardly register on the neck pickup.
View attachment 5397128

Gibson 2007 SG Supreme - yep, that’s a side wound Mudbucker at the neck and a mini at the bridge
View attachment 5397129 View attachment 5397131 View attachment 5397132

Overall thoughts - the magnetic film appears to be a fun thing to have for reference and a nondestructive view of what’s under a sealed pickup cover. The color gage is ok for a general feel but I wouldn’t stake my reputation on it. Every one of the pickups measured sounds great, some sound fantastic, so I wouldn’t put too much emphasis on one picture vs another. Where it might be very useful is determining the pickup design (pole vs blade vs multi blade) on sealed pickups and maybe trouble shooting of non functioning or poorly functioning pickups. Also, of note was the confirmation on the 2015 bass that there’s some serious magnetic pull on those strings (but we already knew that) to the point where you can even count the windings on the flat wound strings.

Fun stuff, enjoy. I’ll post a link to the Amazon page I purchased the magnetic film from, it was about $35 for one 4x6 inch sheet and should last for years.
Interesting! I would never have guessed that the Les Paul had split coils.

Fun post.

Speaking of magnets. I spent some hours yesterday with the Silverburst and TV Silver Epi Custom Shops. I am wondering if the magnets in them are Alnico. They sound closer to the Gibson Reissues and the DeColas than the standard Epi IV pickups do. At least to my ears.

All that plastic fake chrome.

Wait....that was real chrome on a real bumper back then.
And darn lucky too. I rented one in Monroe, LA while waiting for my stuff to arrive from Huntington Beach, CA. I was on a frontage road off I20 bringing some burgers, fries, and shakes back to the Holiday Inn Holidome when a lady from Tennessee driving a van crossed the center divider. I flashed lights, laid on the horn but she kept coming. My choice was hit her or drive into a drainage ditch and risk ending up on I20 going the wrong way. So, I pulled as far right as I could and as she hit me, threw the car into a spin to pivot around the impact point. Since it was dark and the cops demanded I get checked out at the hospital, I didn't see the condition of the car.

The next day I took the wife to the rental lot to look at the car. It was cracked in half like an egg right at the landau roof line and the support pillar from just behind the driver's seat was driven through the back seat. The rear axle was missing...the real fun part is you can imagine what dried chocolate milkshake looked like all over the inside of the car after sitting out in 100 degree Louisiana weather. All that chrome and steel likely saved me from looking like those milkshakes.

Awesome. I was thinking about the smaller sheet; it should do for bass (and guitar) pickups in general.

Watched a little Sat night. I have a hard time getting into drag racing.
But I did watch every NASCAR race (finishing the Cup race tonight).

Oh, and Rugby that wasn't played too far from Geoff. He was even there. His team unfortunately lost. The camera did catch him a few times. Once when they lost the lead he threw his beer towards the field. The second time when they got scored on after the pounding was underway. He was so mad that time he grabbed the guy's beer next to him that tossed that one on the field.

OK, he was actually there. The rest of that I can't confirm. :smug:

The third time he grabbed the guy next to him and chucked him onto the field.

Given you were staring at someone coming head on--we all know that wan't chocolate milkshake all over the inside of the car. Unless that's what the kids are calling it these days. You're among friends. We all understand.

Most importantly, all of us are glad you survived.

That's super cool, George!
Thx, was a lot of fun. I still have dozens of other basses to check but thought these would interest most people here.

What's the switch do on the BaCH G?
And is that a mod?
Just love your SG.
A previous owner must have had a second pickup professionally installed and as opposed to wiring it VVT like a traditional IV he wired it master volume, master tone and added a three way pickup selector switch for neck/both/bridge. It works surprisingly good and really would be a neat layout for a gigging artist (vs a homebound hack like me). Max volume and tone and flip to neck for nice crisp well defined lows, flip to bridge for bell clear highs, or flip to both for a nicely scooped sound with deep lows and glassy highs. Very gig friendly layout.

Interesting! I wonder how a mid 60s 30k Mudbucker-or copy-would register.
I’ve never measured my 2007 SG Mudbucker to see what the resistance is but I gotta believe it’s higher than my Goth pups which are around 15K IIRC.

You seem to have a lot of free time!
Just takin one for the team.

Interesting. Thanks for posting!
Was fun, can’t wait to do some of my more obscure basses and pups.

Interesting! I would never have guessed that the Les Paul had split coils.
Split Coils in a six string configuration no less. I’m not a guitar guru, but off the top of my head, I don’t recall any Gibson guitar pups with exposed poles in a 3/3 split.

Fun post.

Next time we get together be sure to have one of your custom shops with the “guitar” pickups in it available and we’ll use the magic film to see what’s inside.

Interesting! Thank goodness mother nature gave us electromagnetic forces or we wouldn't enjoy our basses!
I think Mother Nature only gave us magnetic forces. William Sturgeon seems to be credited with inventing the electromagnet. But heck, I’ll raise a pint to each of them!

Awesome. I was thinking about the smaller sheet; it should do for bass (and guitar) pickups in general.
The 4x6 sheet comes in handy if you want to span multiple pickups at the same time. Actually, a 6x8 sheet would be even better. 12” might be too long to fit between the bridge and fretboard of some basses. Also, there are different suppliers of this film. Some come with a foam backing or frame, those won’t work very well when it comes to getting between the strings and pups.
This is the one I bought and I very pleased with the quality and use ability of it…

That's how my BC Rich is wired. I have nothing else to compare it with on that particular bass, but I'm a set-it-and-forget-it type person.

EM forces are all around us. Visible light and lightning are two common sources of electromagnetic fields we're all familiar with.
