The first Eppi VP I bought, a white ‘17 from GC for under $350 had unknown super dead rounds on it. It sounded terrible. Unlike many here, I do not like dead old worn strings. Not that I love bright rounds when they are brand new, but I like to hear the acoustic liveliness of fresher strings. And there’s a tone knob to dial that brightness out if I want less of it. I had a set of the TI PowerBass (purple silks too), and for no other reason than the fact that it has a 107 low string and I frequently drop to D, I stuck them on there. That $350 bass became one of my favorite basses with that simple set of (albeit expensive) strings. It might be the only bass I have that has no mods, it’s just fine the way it is. It will get a Hipshot extender and matching keys, but that will be all.
Dead strings aren't the sound I look for, but EBCFs just seem to age at a planetary pace rather than a butterfly pace.
