Thunderbird Club

No Thunderbirds here..............

Wow!

I do pay attention to what the original bass tone of the song and within some reason I do try to do that too. I just try to keep it simple, once we sound check I do not touch my amp at all, any variation in tone is going to come from using/not using a pick or my fingers, or backing one of the pickups off to favor the other one. I.E. Billy Idol "White Wedding" is all with a pick and the neck pickup, Duran Duran "Hungry like the Wolf" All fingers and the neck pickup backed off slightly so as to favor the bridge and get that tight, slightly nasal JT tone.
Does anyone notice? Most of the time I don't think so, my bandmates don't, with the possible exception of our drummer.
It is like all those bad memes that you see, nobody even kind of understands what I do, and even when I stop they still don't really get it.

Exactly. I have 3 settings, a Ptone/ Thunderbird, a J/Warwick, a p with flats/Gibson. Also use bass PUP volume and tone tweaks (I don't play any basses with a blend knob).

I feel myself beginning to glaze over and check out... Lol.
A one-band (edit) parametric EQ would be ideal for me. Find the troubling aspect of a room or location I'm in, notch it out...
Whereas I immediately zoom in to check the settings. But I got to play with para EQs a lot when I sold stereo & PA/studio gear, and again in a recording engineering class I took years ago.

FedEx was working today..................Best husband ever!
A picture utterly fails to show how stunning the finish on this bass really is.

V - I’m finding it increasingly difficult to fight the urge to buy one of these ZSounds custom jobs. What’s your first impression of the new Eppi offering? Is it pretty much identical in sound, and feel to the original VP? Weight? Quality of finish? Is it a limited run of a few hundred or are they making thousands of them?

I’m in love with that purple sparkle beauty but I already have the original run VP in Ebony (that plays fantastic) try and talk me out of another bird purchase.

purple and blue due to arrive any minute now…

I know it's been beat before, but how on records or live--even top professional shows--the bass can be invisible (practically speaking) to sound people and thus the audience is beyond me. I know it's a band and it all blends together, but how a person can play bass all evening and you really can't tell what they are doing is astonishing--because it doesn't have to be that way. Some can pull it off, so I conclude others just don't know how, don't care, or at times that's what the boss (whoever that is) want's the mix that way.

This was one of the great things about seeing Leon Wilkeson play. While there were, drums, keyboard/piano/organ--and three guitars all going on, Leon could easily be heard at about any point in any song. And felt. All before subs entered the scene helping some thing and blurring others. If it can be done with all that, back then, why not now? But thank heavens we can all hear and feel the kick 3 miles a way.

Yep. Every act I saw in the 70s, you could hear and feel the bass. Uriah Heep, BOC, Skynyrd, Fleetwood Mac, Starship, EWF, etc. Same with almost all recordings - studio or live: Allman Brothers, Hawkwind, Pink Floyd, Sabbath, Beatles, all genres.

I envy this. I try to emulate the bass sound/tone of every song we cover. I do get alot of compliments about what notes/lines I am playing, but rarely about my tone. I guess I'm just doing tone chasing for myself.

If you're getting compliments, they hear it, and like it. Your tone - like the kids - is all right.

Now there’s a trooper! Taking two for the team!
Seriously, I’d love to hear some preliminary reviews about these (even though they may be honeymoon phase). I’m always hesitant to purchase a bird that pretty much is identical to one I already have, and I do have the original run Eppi VP. But that purple is just breathtaking and I don’t have that color in anything Tbird or non Tbird that I currently own.

Ya want thunderbird, we got that covered…
The reverse racks…

I see maybe one more Reverse in my future, then I’m all tapped out (until something unique comes along)…

That pink NR needs to visit Seattle this summer.

I had the same experience. Not sure when it happened or even IF it happened but it SEEMS to me like many bands these days are EQing the bass a bit further back in the mix and boosting the vocals quite a bit forward. Again, I might just be imagining things, but I did have my hearing checked and it’s fine.

Other than flanger, OD, or (seldom) compressor in/out changes, that's how I manage tone. Effects are for effects once things are set (for me). There's an amazing variety of tone available just in the things you mentioned.
I find that so long as whatever I'm playing fits in what we're trying to do with a song, everyone is happy. Well, that and no horrible clams.
