Thunderbird Club

Finally, after saying I was going to buy one for the last three years, I found my Thunderbird.
Owned a Goth and a Pro IV back in 2014 and I really liked them for what they were, but everyone knows when you get serious, there's only two ways to go, and one of them is going to set you back $1,500 or so.
Seriously, I drop by this or that music store nearly every week...three different Guitar Centers, Sam Ash, 8th Street Music, Russo's and Robbie's, and I try out between 50 and 60 basses a year but this is only the second Epiphone Classic IV I've ever seen hanging up...other than a few in Vintage Sunburst, but when I checked out GC online this morning I saw that they had a used one in Alpine White.
Funny thing is, I was actually on my way to Russo's to pay off my Ibanez Talman 300 and approaching the highway I almost headed north but figured, what the hell, Cherry Hill's only 20 minutes away, so I took the exit for 295 south instead and I'm sure glad I did.
Got to Guitar Center five minutes after they opened the door. Went to the bass room (this GC usually has 70 basses or more) and saw the T-bird hanging there right in the doorway.
Grabbed it, plugged it into a little Fended Rumble and knew I had to have it the moment I heard that sweet, sweet tone.
Seriously, I can't tell you how many times I've heard people putting down Gibson basses, complaining about the mudbuckers, about the neck dive, about the crappy bridge, etc, but the simple truth is some people simply don't know what they're talking about.
This thing is an iconic rock bass. It looks great and sounds better. And the best thing about it is I won't have to ever think about buying a Gibson because this does everything the Gibson can do.
$399...hipshot bridge, hardshell case, and the only thing I have to do is put on the proper strings.

Crappy pic from the GC website.
Put it on layaway.
Two basses in two weeks.
Gas can be a serious issue!

Love it!

Great post too, I always enjoy it when I read something like this, glad you stepped out and tried a Thunderbird.
I've taken a moment to add you to the club, do you have a preferred pagan ritual for your initiation?
Number 641 is all yours - Be Welcome here!

Thanks, I believe I'm already a member from when I owned my Pro IV. Sold it when times were tough, but now things are looking up...back then I loved playing but simply wasn't that good. Now, however, I'm in a band and it looks like we're really getting it together.
I try to keep one thing in mind...dont just play the bass, be the bass!

The correct ritual for Coventry (temperate or not) is to ride down the high street naked on a horse.
Godiva hair is optional. Good thing, too, because if it was required, some of us would fail. Others would be just fine. I'm on the failure side of that one, having had the genetic progressively more shiny head starting when I was about 19. I consider it a sign of something or another. Fortunately, the 'Birds don't seem to care one way or another.

When my time comes, not sure everyone wants to see that.
Won't be a pretty sight.
You don't live in Coventry, so we're safe.

Kat of course hits the nail on the head. The point of the ritual is not to make you feel welcome or part of the community. The point is to make others uncomfortable/squeamish.

Virginal White eh!.....I like it!. Welcome, from what I have experienced in the greatest club on TB is that we are talking about anything and everything Thunderbird and anything else that seems to be lurking in the twisted and crooked dark caverns in our minds ;)

Just so you know, I particularly enjoyed that bit.
I hate the sound of a Jazz, I didnt know much about them until I bought a real beautiful one and no matter how I modded it I still hated it and that is the very reason I ended up with my first Thunderbird, I put out an ad to trade for a Thunderbird and a guy at a music shop gave me a brand new one straight up. I never even really considered a Thunderbird I just new I had to get rid of the Jazz. My Thunderbird is all I play out of my 4 basses.

God dammit I love this stupid Thunderbird. It's really perfect but I'm seriously considering dropping some aftermarket pickups in it. My initial thought are Lull's. I've heard them in person. Huge, ballsy, and pure rock and roll sex. Of course they are also 5 bills...what are some other good options?

What's it cost to have a bass body painted? My Goff has a lot of flat black paint on it, and I was pondering sanding it down to bare wood, sealing it and having it shot in some sort of obnoxious metal flake. I have room to sand it but maybe not paint it, and my time finishing guitars proved to me that I'm not very good at it. Music Central is putting the bridge Kat sent me in place of the Supertone since the damn ferules keep pulling out of the body. Guess they don't like being tuned to Drop C.
