No problem... I can now see how it might have come across as not how I intended. Here's a little background on me. I own basses I have no business owning talent-wise but since I have the scratch I buy them and they make me happy. :)

Justifying ebony 1979 Thunderbirds? They justify themselves. After seeing that tally of how many were made in 1979, I have been noticing '79s when they pop up on Reverb a whole lot more than I did before.

So, there's one more out there in the wild to be discovered and reeled in?

Made the same decisions as you King, but my down fall was not being responsible enough in my youger years to realize that i could have made that work to my advantage.

I hear ya, man. I definitely had a lengthy bit of time learning responsibility and losing some bad habits. But, I think, in the end, we've all got to trust that we know what's best for each of us....to at least some degree. I didn't want to have kids, 'cause I felt like I wouldn't be the best father. But, beyond all that, music has been a constant, and I'm glad I found it (or, it found me!). Cheers

When i find myself saying, i wouldn't be the best father, as i've also felt, my whole family says that i'd be an awesome dad.
So, i bet, but how would i know, that you'd be a great dad as well.
And besides, you got 5 great kids, those Birdy's of yours.:)

It never goes away if you have it. Or it has you. I did have a kid, and spent a couple decades doing the dad thing. No music to speak of during that time. About nine or ten years ago, some other parents decided that the kids shouldn't have all the fun and started playing. Including me. I have been hardly doing anything else except work and play since. I'm actually trying to play fewer shows these days. When it got up to anywhere from two to four per [edit] month [/edit], it started being more grind than fun. Once or twice a month is perfect.

And, it must be a bit genetic. My son is now playing trumpet professionally in LA. Yeah, I'm a disgustingly proud father. It can be hard to keep tucked in, but boasting about the kid too much can also be a little obnoxious, so I try to keep it tucked in most of the time.

I get crap from people from time to time about how many basses I have and what some of them cost. Not sure why people feel the need to lecture me on my spending habits (same with the price of my morning coffee) but I don't lecture them on how much they spend on another giant TV for their home or how often they take the family out for dinner. I have had to work hard for my gear and enjoy it because I know what it took to land that piece of gear. A lot of the gear I currently own was out of my financial reach in the past but now I can buy it and not struggle to make ends meet.

I am in the same boat talent-wise Larry, but the gear makes me happy :)

I could probably get by with a 3rd hand Squier Bass. But it's all about spending habits, my parents have multiple classic cars and just finished building a new house out in the country. One of the contractors was looking at the property and the cars and said to my dad "It must be nice" (as he's drinking his 3rd X-Large coffee and 5th cigarette, also goes to the Bahamas 1-2 times a year). My dad said to him "We don't drink, we don't smoke, we don't get coffee every morning, we don't go out to eat often, and last time we went on a real vacation was almost 10 years ago. The only thing we really spend money on is cars, and the house."

Just have to decide what life style you want and find a way to achieve it.
It also helps that they only have 1 kid with similar interests.
