Thunderbird Club

White Bird Day..........

How soon they forget.:eyebrow: It's the purple silks.:smug:
I'm pretty sure that purple silk business is nothing more than Internet myth; unlike my empirically verified belief about the tug bar.

Virtually every 60s Thunderbird, probably without exception, sounds better than every other iteration of a Thunderbird. Common denominator? Mahogany tub bar on all the old ones. Don't be a science denier.;):smug:

I got a $199 paint job from Earl Scheib on my 74 Nova SS when I was in high school. I did all the prep and tape work before I ran it down to them.

The proactive prep and tape work was a good idea-

I had my '68 Olds Cutlass Supreme painted blue with white vinyl top dye job when I was in high school-

The ThunderCaster - if Fender could build a Tbird here’s what would it look like

note: every part used on this bass is from a Fender Telecaster except the body and pickguard, speaking of which - there’s a nod to Fender in the about facing bird logo on the pickguard (design concept by me, but Irv brought it to life).

And The 1966 NR Tribute Tbird with pickups in the proper vintage locations but hot rodded with a Wenge/Wenge neck and a master vol, vol/tone, vol/tone control layout. Finished in Gibson Golden Mist Polly (same as Fender Shoreline Gold Metallic) complete with a ‘66 badge on the bird.

[Invalid or Expired Link Removed]till lots of work to do before complete, but hopefully both will be ready for a test spin next week when @JIO comes down to visit with Pat Wilkins and I.
Those are looking very nice!

In the 80s when inflation was double digits, I worked for Philips. They gave me a 2% raise. I told them I refuse to accept it...and quit. Moved to a competitor and then hired the guy Philips sent from Chicago to the Bay Area to replace me. How was copper wire invented? Two Dutchmen fighting over a penny. What does the Philips logo mean? Double cross and shaky deal. If you ain't Dutch, you ain't much. Those were the sayings inside Philips...no, I'm not bitter. :D

I worked for Philips, NXP and now Nexperia which is currently Chinese owned…….wanna talk about change?….

What year was that one? I really dig the color.

That is an '89, so shortly after Henry J took over Gibson and had them re-issued, I bought it new that year, originally it had all black hardware and some really funky pickups underneath the plastic covers. Around 2004 or so I was on another forum called "The DudePit" and the Gibson guys there were all about chrome hardware, not black, I was easily influenced and over time I replaced everything black with chrome parts, the pickups went thru a couple changes. It has Lulls on it now, they were ridiculous money, even back in 2008 when I bought them - No price break from Mike, even tho I was/am an endorsing artist for them!
I've owned more than 60 basses in 50 years of playing, this one the longest, all the wear is the real deal, I put it there, so it's probably my favorite bass of my current collection. When I get too old to play and have to suck food out of a tube this bass will be the only one I keep. :)

You played a part in both - excellent fitting pickguards and sweet custom logos.

I might try and modify the ThunderCaster guard to show a bit more of the burst, when I designed the pickguard I was planning on a solid body color, but at the last second I changed it to a three tone target burst (reminiscent of the 1970’s Japan era Fender bursts).

I might also remove the “66” numbers from the NR tribute bass, everytime I look at them I see boobs (LOL - then again that might not be a bad thing).

Wow, I love that bass. That might be my favorite looking one I’ve seen so far.

Looking forward to checking them out in person! I used Shoreline Gold on a fretless I did years ago. It was a rattle-can finish and never cured completely so I gilded it & Pat did the final-finish/clearcoat. I called it "Goldfinger-board" :)
