Thunderbird Club

Found this the other night. Looks good.
Cadillac Pelham Blue Poly 24 (1960)
Let me know if you wind up ordering through them. I was looking at their paints a while back.
It's Wednesday.

Nothing more Glam than a White Thunderbird.

Sparkly dresses and heels help with the glam factor.

A much sought after vintage 1977 Bicentennial Tbird…
Except for the paint which was removed and repainted white, and the neck that has been modified, the pickups which are no longer sidewinders and have been replaced with gold SDs, the controls which have been replaced by preamp, the body which has been routed for a battery, the tuners which have been replaced with gold ones, the knobs which are gold and stacked, the bridge which is a gold Hipshot, the truss cover which is now white. And no mention of the availability of all the original parts so the new owner could somewhat return it to stock if desired.

From the looks of it the only truly original unmodified parts on the bass are the Pickguard, the strap pins and the control cavity cover. For a couple thousand less than the asking price it might be a sweet find. I’d need to hold that neck in hand to see how first position feels, looks like they drastically changed the contour to a sharp V from the first fret to the headstock. To be honest, it’s nice looking and tastefully done, but just begs the question - why?
IF it is the one owned by Pete Way, then it has been played and broken in a couple spots, including the control cavity. IF its legit, it was also owned by the bassist in The Dogs D'Amour and was painted red for a while. I know someone that is digging into its background to see if it really is Pete's former bass. But like you point out, not much original left on it.

I don't see them getting any cheaper anytime soon, there's too few. Being a little older I see it as something I get to have for awhile and that I should enjoy it as much as possible - eventually it will go to someone that hopefully gets as much enjoyment as I do from it.

FYI, I’ve recently become a Dogs fan.

If I recorded and posted this correctly here’s a few minute recording made up of ten Tbirds back to back…

It was a quick and dirty single take direct from the bass to an interface and into the iPad, no tone shaping other than the onboard controls on each bass, which were all set to neck volume of 9, bridge volume of 7 and tone setting of 5. Each bass was played finger style directly over the neck pickup. I tried to come up with a quick tune that would highlight each string and octaves as well. Please pardon the cruddy playing, it’s just here to give a good idea how each of the pickups in these basses compare.

Here’s the order they were recorded in:
1) (0:00 min) Eppi Purple Sparkle ‘64 - new 760ProBucker pickups, stock strings
2) (0:23 min) 2017 Eppi VP - old 760ProBucker pickups, Fender 7250 round nickels
3) (0:50 min) North ‘66 NR Tribute - old 760ProBuckers in vintage locations, Fender 7250 rounds, Wenge neck
4) (1:18 min) BaCH NR - ChinaBuckers, Fender 7250 rounds, ultra low action so there’s a bit more fret noise
5) (1:42 min) 2022 Gibby NR - stock pickups, Fender 7250 rounds
6) (2:05 min) North ThunderCaster - Fender wide range humbuckers in extreme positions (at the heel and at the bridge)
7) (2:30 min) Lull Tom Petersson Tbird - Lull pickups both at the heel and neck positions, Optima Gold round wound strings
8) (2:52 min) North BlingBird - ChinaBuckers in three positions, heel, mid and bridge, Optima Gold round wound strings
9) (3:16 min) Hot rodded Goth (cap job) - stock goth Eppi pups, EBCF strings
10) (3:40 min) FrankenGoth - Bart pups, Aggie preamp, coil switch set on single coil, treb flat, bass boosted, LaBella Black tapes

Yeah, as in poor thing. Provenance, if it actually has any isn't an attraction for me. As George explained not much of it is original, and that neck "upgrade" is really a red flaggy kind of thing, so a no-go, at least for me.

Different settings than I usually use. But all sound good. My preferences from this run with those settings are probably #9 and #5.

It looks like a cool Thunderbird. But that is sort of like taking Overend’s Thunderbird that Martin basically shamed Watts into selling him and replacing everything. What’s the point?
