Thunderbird Club

Someone i work with occasionally just got a new bass. Cool guy , he a has one of my first Alneo sets and really likes his Neo p Bass pickups
Beautiful bass! I had just seen it in a Spector group on Facebook.
Sweet bass! Love the trans blue over that super-flamed maple. The abalone(?) markers go really well with it too!

Never knew Spector made a bird-type bass.
Indeed they do:

I plan on it! I’ve played 2 ‘74 models earlier this year and knew I had to have one ever since (been after one for the longest, though!).

I could try and get one of those but I’m trying to wait for the one I’ve dreamed of to come along (a burst)—but now this makes me think I should act quick! It took me until January to ever see any in person my whole life.

The Grecobird is nearly half the price, though… less even!

Decisions, decisions…
I have rescued a 76

jealous.....happy you picked that project...came out awesome, always liked those, top notch instrument and from every respective, probably the best Gibson bass ever (imho)...don't think I've ever seen a sunburst one in person but played a few black ones and (my fave) natural ones and absolutely love them...Greg Lake live with ELP...shivers...

Good evening Thunderbird loving sisters and brothers. I hope all are well and have had a good, relaxing weekend. Mine has been eventful as my new band had its first gig. There are 8 people which is a bunch to have on stage. We played a winery that is located in a large old railroad warehouse. The place has delicious wine and a relaxed vibe. I ended up using my 5 string Jazz most of the night, and used my little Ashdown tube head through my insanely light GR 2X12 cab as my monitor. It is nice to be able to hear myself. I thought we played and sounded quite good. We had most of the folks up dancing and heard several kind remarks. Two personal things I plan to work on, is not staring down at the neck while playing, and losing the music stand. I didn't really need it, except for a few song, but seems like something to overcome.
Still, a great evening with a band I feel has some great people. It is going to be interesting to see where we go.
Take care folks, and have a great week.

Yep. My Spector Rex5 Pro was the Tbird shaped object that originally got me in this club. Since then I’ve been surrounding myself with every Tbird shaped bass out there.

I LOVED my C.A.B. M +.
Loaded mine with the official Mesa Subway cabinet package.
I passed mine along recently to replace it with an Opus.

What a great way to DI to FOH.
Send a fully formed mic’d cab tone without any stage footprint or pollution of the signal by stage wash.
Awesome! That's what we like to hear! If you need anything in respect of the OPUS, let me know! :)

What I don't get is that I'm the only one that bothered by it. Our singer BL notices, but she's a bit draggy too in the rhythm dept. She doesn't think so, but she is.
I tend to play a little forward on the bouncing ball of rhythm, but I can see it and self-regulate. With a good rhythm section the conversation monitors itself, it becomes more about phrasing and less about time. But not here.
I asked the drummer if he was interested in getting together, just him and me, but he's apparently too busy. I'm sure he is, he's a good guy, there are no harsh feelings there.
Our guitar player is also playing bass in three other bands, and that has impeded our ability to gig, another issue. I'll be talking to the BL pretty shortly.
I've addressed this stuff before, the gig ability with our guitar player, and the drummer with the BL. She gets me, hopes I don't quit. I like everybody, but this is bad for my head.
Sounds problematic even for a person with a pretty wide tolerance bandwidth. Not implying you don't, just that given what you said, sounds like there are multiple factors at play not just one. One could maybe be tolerated, but you have several. Music should be fun. Life is too short for living with problems that can be avoided. Sounds like you should find a graceful way to exit (maybe have another gig in place), as this one doesn't sound like it's going to get better--and will almost certainly get worse and more stressful. I hope you get it sorted out and can fully enjoy playing.

It's one of my favorite players!

It’s tough, and I’m in a similar situation. I’m in two bands, and one of them (started 3 1/2 years ago) is a shining example of how it should work. We all like and respect each other, have generally the same taste in music and idea of the direction we want the songs to go. Everybody’s ideas are considered and usually develop into a song. At the moment, we have more material than there is time to develop. The only problem with this band is getting in regular weekly practices together. Mainly because people’s lives are getting in the way, specifically with family health issues. We all WANT to be there weekly but it’s not always possible. But everyone in this band does a lot of practice and writing on their own, so, as an example, we have a show on 7/12. We had practice last Wednesday and won’t have a chance to meet up until 7/10. But we know, if we play through the set twice and hammer out any weaknesses at that practice, we’ll do well at the show two days later. And BTW, we will be playing 4 new songs and a cover song all which we have not done live. This band is a good unit.

Then there’s my other band. We have been together for over 8 years and it’s almost always been a struggle. The guitar player, who basically writes all the music, is a pretty stubborn guy, who really kind of has to have it his way. He’s been in bands over his lifetime that had large draws and has played to big audiences, and I think he just can’t get over that, and understand that we’re old, and those days are mostly over. So, he’s never really been big on playing out. We could be a really good bar band playing many places around the Bay Area (like a lot of bands I’m aware of do), but many of these shows may not have a bunch of people there. While I get that can be a drag, I still feel it would be worth it because is FUN!. Furthermore, he doesn’t really seem to have a lot of respect for the drummer/vocalist, and even though I have known him since the early ’90’s, I have never felt he has much respect for me either. We all like rock, but definitely prefer different genres, so, since he writes mostly everything, I find myself constantly compromising/settling for playing music I don’t love. When I used to present ideas, he just couldn’t/wouldn’t do anything with them. Many of those ideas turned into great songs in the other band, so now I just save my ideas for that band. The drummer is and can be good, but he spends zero time practicing on his own or working to be that next level drummer that both me and the guitar player would like him to be. While I know playing drums and singing has to be hard, he does it, and does it well, but blames having to sing on why his drumming sometimes isn’t good. And the guitarist is always focused on him and his tempos, to the point where he’ll mention his tempos are off, but I actually don’t notice, and other times I notice and the guitar player doesn’t seem to???

Anyway the short of it is the guitarist wants practice two nights a week and since we almost never play out, I’m finding it to be a chore, and have basically had one foot out the door for a long time. I feel a strong sense of loyalty to these guys, but I’m truly not enjoying going there twice a week. Not to mention that between both bands, when we are all on schedule, it equates to three nights a week of going to practice (never weekends), and with work, which is physical and involves quite a bit of driving each day, that’s getting to be too much for my old body.

Problem is, my other band doesn’t get together often enough (if we religiously did once a week, that would be enough), and I can’t seem to find an opening for another band around here. I definitely want to be in more than one band, one that gets together once a week, and one that just wants to get out and play. Fun, familiar but not common cover songs would be ideal!

The thing that keeps me from quitting is that I have a strong feeling that I might regret it. So I try to find a way to make it fun, and chalk it all up to getting more experience. Also, we all share a really nice studio space, and at $300 a month, I’d hate to give it up.

a lot of color there, what channel and settings on the amp? Thx for doing this Dave!...
I think it’s a nice sounding bass. I’ve almost picked one up a few times over the years but haven’t. No real reason why. I came close when I was spending a lot of time in Sac and a tiny music store there was a dealer. Played one and liked it. Went back a few weeks later intending to get one and they were sold. Just got too busy and never followed up. Super light and fun to play.
