Played a gig last night, and by the end of the night I felt like I was driving an engine that was losing power. Our time feel was slowing down. That makes me effing crazy
Finally I wanted to put the bass down.
The back story: our drummer had open heart bypass surgery not long ago, and is still getting his strength back. When he first joined he was finishing up cancer treatment and had just gotten clear... And two or so months after joining he fell six feet to a concrete walkway and broke his shoulder, collar bone and three ribs.
Now I know it sounds like another rock band/Spinal Tap spoof, but he's been compromised by something his whole time with us. The tempo thing is making me miserable, and yet the poor guy's been through hell. I feel like a bad guy, sorry of a spoiled brat, telling the story... And three of us, including him, are well over sixty.
But music is my only good place to go lately, and this is murder...
I have been told he's always has some level of issue with having a sluggish feel, especially when it comes to fills add turnarounds. But he's consistent and does listen, he's got good stuff going on.
I'm just having trouble with it, and knowing this guy's experience I don't want to be a cold bastard.
This kind of thing is often my experience, this kind of compromise. I just need to get a better gig. Last really good band I played gigs with was a production of Jesus Christ Superstar. That was killer...
