Exactly. What I've always done if there's an effects loop. If no loop, I don't use the preamp pedal. It just sounded really bad through this particular amp.

Here’s my latest pickup, a 2012 Gibson Thunderbird IV in vintage cherry red.
I basically sold an old white Orville by Gibson Thunderbird. I liked the white one, but really fell in love with the look of this cherry one. Who woulda figured.
And this is a close sibling to my 1992 Gibson Les Paul LPB-1, also in vintage cherry red.

Hadn't heard that before. I changed the original post slightly to maybe help (for those who know)...
It was a Korean reissue. I sold it off a long time ago. Just didn't need it anymore. Never got used after I got the Carvin, and then the Thunderbird.

I really like his old stuff like that, I saw him twice, once right after Past, Present and Future and a couple years after that, he is a brilliant songwriter and his touring bands were simply excellent. The second time I saw him I recall him doing a great rendition of "Broadway Hotel".
