Took a baby step tonight. Went to the āCeltic Music Societyā meeting on the mountain.
They meet from 6:00 to 9:00 on Tuesdays. There were about twelve there tonight. They said there are about twenty or so in the group. They jam traditional Celtic and Americana. Very easy stuff. I will start attending, first on six string acoustic guitar (reminds me I need new strings) as I learn the songs. Theyāre more than happy to have me bring a Thunderbird (so long as I keep to roots and fifths, and triads (and donāt bring heavy iron). I think the little Hartke I have may be overkill. Iāll use the Rumble 25 I have sitting in a closet. They have an upright bass member who makes it occasionally. I made it clear I donāt do upright.
There is a guy in the group who is a pretty well known Celtic harpist who plays Celtic festivals in SoCal with various projects. The dude is amazing (think Alan Stivell).
The leader is a woman, probably eighty-something, who has played in various SoCal projects since the sixties on dulcimer and concertina. She also plays guitar. Sheās amazing.
One of the guitarists is a woman who plays guitar and percussion in local projects.
Another guitarist played and sang a song for us that she has been practicing, Bad Companyās Seagull. Very impressive.
The music was really good. The leader will be providing me their fake book, a bit at a time. The joke was the banjo player wasnāt there, and some seemed relieved. He is apparently way loud.
So Iām going to be slowly blending into the music scene up here. There is also a guitar group here, but they donāt seem to meet as regularly. Baby steps.
