I know LTD is intended to convey a special edition with limited production, but it can be taken as having limited functionality. It always seemed to me to be a dumb thing to call a car.

We had 2. 1971 with a 400ci engine and a 1979 with a 351ci engine. The 400 was a boat, but good car. The 79 was the one with the variable venturi instead of a carb. Comfy car when it actually worked, which wasn't often.

Once local assembly of US Fords as “prestige cars” (above local manufacture of mass market Fords) ceased with the Galaxie LTD in ~73 we got a local LTD in the same way as in the mid 60s we stopped assembly of Fairlanes (replaced by Galaxie) and introduced a local manufactured Fairlane - a stretched local Falcon. The LTD was then a stretched version of the local Fairlane for the first 2 models (P5 & P6) later (after petrol shock of the late 70s) it became a upmarket trim and style version on Fairlane bits. It was our top line Ford.

In the same way the Statesman was the top GM in either DeVille or Caprice (the top) trims / style. (Yes, I know De Ville & Caprice are other vehicles in the US, we also had unique Holden based Brougham’s and Calais’).
