Thunderbird Club

Had to look up the watch. Very interesting. I thought (wrongly) that it might be directed in some way by sound waves. I have a old Bulova Accutron that actually has a tuning fork in it to keep time. They hum, not tick. They were the first electronic watch, or completely electronic.

Mine looks like this. (Railroad Approved).

I have worn it while playing a Thunderbird Bass.
Yes, a great piece of tech that got replaced by a silicon chip and battery - like the wind up watch itself (for the masses). The Bulova watches were / are really nice. Yours is very nice in a minimalist way, cool it has the “Railroad Approved” mark. Back in the day that was a serious matter.
I think they may be owned by Citizen these days?

Enicar (started by a branch of the Swiss Racine family) has an interesting history as well. They have a Sherpa model due to being used in early Everest climbing attempts. They were also prominent in early dive watches, and were chosen as the preferred supplier to the US Navy divers after they won a competition against the Rolex and a couple of other famous dive watch brands.
They had an eye on promotions and famously strapped a dive watch to the propeller of a ship, and when it was retrieved at the other end of the journey it was still working!
They used famous brand ambassadors in print ads, the three most recognisable to me being race drivers Stirling Moss and (2x F1 WC) Jim Clark, and Aussie Tennis great Ken Rosewall.

Like a lot of great watch brands they died during the great Quartz watches revolution in the 1970s. These days the brand is owned by a Chinese company, like MG in cars, not the same to me.

I found them while searching to replace / emulate the watch my Dad wore when I was a kid. I remembered the “look” of it and that it had a distinctive logo on the watch face. My sister’s think it was an Omega and that it was very thin front to back. But when I searched the internet I found Enicar with their Saturn logo and it leapt out to me. I ended up buying one on eBay and it looks very close to Dads old watch. It was also much cheaper than buying a vintage Omega! It is a daily “wind up” style watch. It is a circa 1958 model. I only wear it occasionally but I do like it. Plus dad played tennis regularly up til having family responsibilities, and Ken Rosewall was a favourite player of his and also lived in the St George area of Sydney. So I put 2 and 2 together and got 7.25… I figure it is within the realms of possibility that he had an Enicar rather than an Omega. 😊

Dads looked very similar to this, but it had one of those gold stretch watch bands. I just have leather. Keep tossing up about getting one of the stretchy metal watch bands…

Yeah, it depends how accurate you need to be.
I have “approximate” figures stashed away in my head. Like an inch is 2.54 cm, 1 mile is 1.6km (close it’s really 1603 point something metres) - I learnt that from athletics, the old mile race became the 1600 metre race, (and horse racing the same plus the old “2 mile” races became 3200 metre races eg the Melbourne Cup).
Speed, I used to know and can dredge it up if needed - but I haven’t driven a mph (only) speedo car for 40 years.

Pronounciation ? We all said “kill o metres” to start with, but the offical (and now most heard) is K’lom’etres (something like that).
Most US pronunciations I hear have been kil-lom (like mom)-eh-ters :). In bicycle-speak, a "century" (ride) is 100k/62 miles and conversely a double century ride is 200k/124 miles. (removing fractional tails). A 40k individual time trial (ITT) is 25 miles. (24.8m) Like my Honda VFR Interceptor that is 782cc and branded as 800cc... "rounding off"

That ‘15 $200 CP I picked up plays great. The pickups, not so much. For supposed Gibson Tbird pluses, they are a disappointment.
I have two (2) TB+ pickups I want to part with. One is from my ‘97, where the other original one was dead, the other is a brand new Gibson Modern TB+ I bought a few months ago.

$75 plus shipping.

The new one alone is worth more.

My strings of choice. EXL160BT's  50-67-90-120

I like them on that bass, especially when they're reasonably new, bright a nd a bit snappy. Haven't tried them on anything else just yet.

I was all set to do general body sanding, when the asymmetry and boxiness of the wood around and under the neck pocket just really started griping me.

So I made some changes based on what was available to work with.

Feels like an improvement and a better match to the planned asymmetries of the shape, instead of a production error.

It's still slightly asymmetric (limited to the wood that's available), but in a way that echoes the asymmetric horns. More harmonious to the overall design, I think.

It'll also let me extend the profiled part of the neck by a fret or two for better access.

I think you will like them. For me they deliver all the things I want to hear. I pretty much have them on all my basses, except for those with flats.
